canadas standing as a nation- at the midcentury mark is to be revealed by the ninth decennial cen sus which started cm june i and continues through the month this is an event of first importance to all can adians by the years end the census takers will have drawn 3a fulllength portrait of ourselves this will not only indicate our achievements in the past but will aid in estimating and guiding our future progress there is nothing new about the census it was known injbabyldhia and china- 5000 years ago more recently jhowever canada leads the way in the year 1666 a census was taken iin the colony of new france this is befjeyed to have been the first census of modern times the census is vitally important to government and business firstly it is used as a basis for figuring repres entation in the dominion parliament it also provides figures which enable the government to budget for old agepensions and baby bonuses or to deter mine trends in business and industry business relies on the census to provide informa tion that is used in determining plroduction or markets a typewriter riboon manufacturer for instance may base his productioron the number of stenographers re ported in the census everyone is expected to answer all questions asked by the enumerators in fact there are penalties provided by law for failure to answer these questions at the gam time the l p thesecrecy of our answers the income tax officer or the department of national defence cannot use this information for tax or conscrip tion purposes in fact they cant even see the informa tion as the bureau of statistics is forbidden to issue any statement that would directly or indirectly reveal infor mation about a particular person or concern canadas 1951 census is to be taken by a new me- thad known as the marksense method this is the first time this method has been used anywhere in the world directory nielsen the chiropractor f drugless therapist 37th year of practice lady attendant hon tues frl 26 with forms two feet four inches wide used by the censustakers in 1941 on these forms they will mark the answers to questions using an elcctrographic pen filled with a spe cial ink when all the forms have been filled in they will be fed into an electronic statistical machine which punch es holes in cards each hole conforming to a mark made on the mark sense cards with the special ink each of these punched cards can be filed or counted automati cally in any number of ways in a few operations the census machine really a wizard among machines can report how many pro fessional engineers there are between the ages of 21 and 50 in the province of ontario and the machine wont let errors go past if a marksense form shows a farmer being paid 55 per bushel for his wheat the machine will reject it everything must be correct be fore it goes into the machine thus the cards coming from the machine have complete and accurate informa tion so there will be a very important visitor to every canadian home this june and it is the duty as well as the right and privilege of every one of us as citizens to cooperate in answering the questions that will make it possible to complete canadas national
