the ontarioquebec division of the cwna -y- c i the editors corner sadness in georgetown this is one of those weeks when being an editor is difficult a good friend and one of georgetowns best citizens dave saxe died suddenly friday after being rushed to hospital in toronto then on monday came more sad news with word that another fine young man gordon mcdonald had lost his life in a jet plane crash in england death to anyone brings its sadness and it is not often that we make editorial comment at such times but there is a particular sense of loss when young people die who have so much of their life ahead of them both dave and gordon leave widows and young families both were successful in their chosen careers the one as a garage operator who had the respect and friendship of his competitors the other as a member of the royal airfjorcev who had won rapid promotion and was counted as among the top young men in the ser vice there is little that one can say publicly or private ly to the families except to tell them what they already know that their grief is shared by a wide circle of friends and that the names of their loved ones will be long remembered a growing industry while we often assiduously chase much smaller news items it occurred to us one day recently that we had ignored the really big news story of the year this is that smith stone has got too big for their breeches which necessitated a large addition on the rear of their no i plant a continued expansion in both volume and variety of products has been solved for the present by building an addition which gives more than 10000 square feet as well as a huge long storage shed farther back on the property no new departments have been added and the extra space is being used by existing departments the special products division which had heretofore been scattered at various places in the three buildings owned by the company has all been moved to the academy road location these include cup vending machines such as coffee bar and colespa electromedical and similar instruments and fiberglas resin laminates stores are all located in the main plant now while the king street building houses the bakelite and mould ing departments the smith stone growth has been phenomenal since its inception in town a quarter century ago and particularly since its purchase a few years ago by a company whose president is colonel w e phillips it has gradually assumed a- position as the towns first industry there are some six hundred employees on the payroll many of therrii commuters who come to work each day by car and bus from communities as far away as brampton and cheltenham one plant has had several additions made and two other plants have been added in recent years as well as a toronto sales office a favourable factor is too that smith or stone has not had a mushroom growth but has grown sensi bly slowly and surely adding new products from time to time adding more employees when the need arises r potpourri district young baseball hopefuls have an excellent opportunity for a tryout with a big league outfit when the cleveland indians hold a baseball school in oak- yille next week on monday and tuesday
