chealn yboii clad move laformatlan o jrheaa and a amy idea la the booklet araond the bsaov 4sk the hessian fly some years ago was listed as the most destructive twff attacking wheat in the field for the past ten or fifteen yfears it has been a pest of minor impor tance eairing the past few days we have had two inquiries from hal- ton growers who were wondering what was causing thii wtrest co break off juit near the ground up on investigation they found what appeared like flaxseeds this is the pupae stage of the hessian fly it is quite possible that the cool wea ther this spring was favourable for its development the adult is a small mosquito like fly the eggs sve laid on the leaves and the maggots from these eggs woruc down between the leaf and the stem these maggots suck the juice out of the stems and cause a weak- ended condition and consequent breakage at or near the ground and at about this time of year the adult flies emerge the latter part of august and in early september and lay their eggs on volurcteer wheat oron early seeded wheat control if the field is not seeded all wheat stubble should be plowed under completely as soon as pos sible after the wheat- is harvested and then worked to- firm the soil few of the flies will be able to emerge from such soil if plowing cannot be done promptly let the volunteer wheat come up this wheat will be ear lier than j the regularly seeded wheat under normal conditions and will act as a trap crop for the egg laying period of the fly- thli should not be plowed under until the end of september late planting is also recommend ed by our entomological authori ties in short jf you were troub led with hessian fly this year mm just as late as is safe in your district to obtain a good stand be fore wlrjter in our opinion this wif rang from- rou sep tember 6th to septsaaj jshh m
