it is an exposition of the creed printed in 1675 in england and came into mr allens possession while he was serving overseas with the army in the first war the book is in a wonderful state of preservation and is a prize possession of this local man the book was printed for john williams senior bookseller and was written by john lord bishop of chester it is a fourth edition of the work and bears the inscription printed by jm for john williams at the crown in crosskeyscourt in little britain how little our language has changed is shown in the fact that the only great difference between printing in the seventeenth century and nowadays is a peculiar construction of the letter s which appears more like an f the book also contains many footnotes in latin and a picture of the author under which is prin ted effigies reverendi in christo patris joannis pear- sony cestriensis episcopi aetatis suae 63 a card of thanks well it was a surprise to be so suddenly among the missing in town last week fresh from a weeks vacation at the beach we could see nothing ahead but our nose to the grindstone for the next month while one after another the rest of the herald office went on vaca tion no one was more surprised when we found our selves having a fast ride complete with screaming siren in harold mcclures ambulance and a fast trip to the st josephs hospital operating room monday night for the removal of obstreperous appendix week after week we are accustomed to helping people make up cards of thanks to friends for their kind ness while a person is in hospital now that we have to do one for ourselves we can much more appreciate the sentiment behind these for at these times one finds just how kind people can be so it is that the flowers and cigarettes sent by the lions club and legion the get well cards from friends each of which was carefully perused during long hours of inactivity and the en quiries at home about our health were so much appre ciated we are grateful too to garfield for putting out the herald and catching up on the loose ends which were left by our sudden departure and to les who was on vacation but came back for two days to lendfe hand in getting out the paper were working at half speed this week at home and next week hope to be back on the job full time low pressure causes twisters a recent sunday drive to hornby still shows the effects of the twister damage which hit so severely the residents of a small district nearby houses and barns have been almost all repaired but hundreds of uprooted trees still line the roadways and fields many of these are stately elms which had been standing half a century or more it is to be hoped that some action will be taken to replace these natural beauties to the landscape for future generations to enjoy it is of interest to learn that the damage from a twister is not caused by the wind but by the very low pressure in the centre cold air sweeping down from above pushes out the warm air near the ground when this happens at an unusually high rate of speed it cre ates a suction on the ground and under such circum- proclamation whereas at a meeting of the council of the town of georgetown it was resolved 5 that the mayor be authorized to proclaim monday aug 6th civic holiday for the current year therefore in compliance with this resolution i hereby j proclaim monday august 6th as a civic holiday for the town of georgetown harold ill w abi3ts rold cleave mayor stances the air whirls around in an upward direction right in the centre of this whirling mass the air pres sure is greatly reduced should the twister pass through aihouse- tile low ered air pressure acts as an explosive force it can be likened to a balloon which when allowed into the rarer atmosphere above the ground soon bursts the pressure inside the balloon being greater than that outside this then was what caused the hornby damage a freak of nature over which man hasono control let us hope that it does not happen soon again pot pourri have you driven over the wonderful new milton- acton highway yet it has just been completed and is one of the finest surfaces in ontario a real pleasure drive on a sunday afternoon the milton district jike in h g the new hofae for old people lets hope that an attractive name willte given to it is rapidly taking shape just the other side of the town and there are several new homes being built on the highway in that vicinity maybe readers thought it was a mistake but that upside dowm ad for a streets- ville event a- few weeks ago was ordered that way ef fective advertising if it isnt overdone neglected to mention recently that bill fair son of the alliance pa per president who was working for a time at the plant here has left to attend summer school at the university of western ontario at- london bill who is a student there hopes to be back in town next summer to learn more about the paper business tom goodlet writ ing to renew his subscription from his home in calgary tells us about the stampede this year mr goodlet is a real fan and seldom has missed this event this year he says a new attendance record was set passing that of 1949 when he was one of the buccaroos who accom panied mayor mccallum on the good will tour from 1 oronto this year the opening day parade was dam pened by a drizzle of rain but the rest of the week was ideal hie finals of the chuck wagon races were run off in a sea of mud the weatherman having set ano ther record by sending a deluge half an hour before starting time eight y thousand people scurried for shel ter but it was soon over and the rainsoaked sightseers stayed to watch the final display of fireworks which rung down the curtain on the 1951 stampede page 6 summer specials f samsm columbia mob sou mai
