corbett atten ded the wedding of their youngest son richard in toronto on satur day august 4tb xhatting with m h b we ve often heard about the famous calgary stam- lede held the first part of july in calgary and know several kiple mcludinj some from town who would hate to miss it weve always been curious as to just ex actly what goes on at this imiiuc show so last weekend when we had isitois fro i that western city we found out quite a lot about it not that were kk attempt a resume of the e tit that would almost like describing all the activities al the toi onto exhibition and since we uiifiil taking any nines at the time of our chat we innil icmemhei much ol the speci fic infoi i ntion hut we do recall getting the distinct impression that the stampede is not an event tak ing plnrr at n showgoimri only it involves the whole city more or less for instance it would be im- txissibe to walk or drive down any of the main business thoroughfares while the stampede is on and not be iiuiiii of it indians from nearby resei vations walk around in full regalia and cowboys in their best chaps and spurs ride on horseback or quite frequently set up a camp stove on a busy corner and proceed to fry up a mess of flapjacks to give away to any passerby who vup one t r ion the first day of he stampede there is a monster parade w believe it was this year they imported beautiful golden palomino ponies from california equipped with the most elaborate saddles and trappings which would run in cost well over a thousand dollars avid of course there were indians and chuckwagons and goodnessknowswhatall this year too there was a small band of wild men from a neighbouring city they had spent some months grow ing thick long beards for the occa sion- and clad in k scanty fur jubi ala alley oop of the comics with footwear to match they brandished enormous knotty clubs almost as big as themseves these wild men did not confine their crazy antiaji to the parade alone but had them selves a simply wonderful time try ing to capture and kiss any prvtty girl to catch their eye they even invaded a large department store had some fun at the lingerie coun ters and then threw the feminine sales stiff into a near panic by chas ing them up and down behind the counters and in the aisles were the store managers annoyed not a bit for the wild men had gathered up a large following and their store was filled with prospective custo mers after the wild- men left for their next venture talking with one of the pre- historics the next day inciden tally a then shaven and very civil ized man our weekend guest ask ed him if they had fulfilled any other engagements in their wild men role and il turned out that they had been guests at celebrations in several western cities and had even had an offer from the toron to ex but their wives objected to having them go they had had those big beards long enough and it was last year if we recall rightly that offic ials in charge of the stam pede decided that in order to kevp better control of the indians atten ding the celebrations that they would revoke their hitherto every thing free privileges and charge them admission since there had been a bit of trouble with some of t he braves who imbibed more than as good for them the result was bid feeling between the stoneyi mid the stampede and the indiiins simply lid not go to the celebra tions the run our was circulatd that the tribe had put a curse on the stampede the result mayor tail the fact was tint it imcl ceij iliy and night ot last years stampede and again we say the result the stoncys had their privileges reinstated this year the weather thisiear very good a friendly welcome awaits you at murt allisons massey harris agency see our display of tractors and
