ontarioquebec division tf the cwna th editors corner a wise decision the school board has made a wise decision this year in renting st johns hall for extra classroom space- the three kindergarten classes seventy one children are enrolled for an alltime record are using the hall while the former kindergarten room has been trans formed into a grade i classroom temporarily in this way there is less disruption in the normal school rout ine for the younger children go to school only half a day and their activities form more of a separate unit than that of the grade children the hall has an extra advantage in being adjacent to the schoolyard during the summer months there was some talk of making do with the present building and staggering classes this would have meant that some students would go to school from 8 to 1230 and others from i to 530 the school system is designed to give children proper rest periods and this would have worked a hardship particularly on those who are slowjr at learn- ing there would have been disruptions too in the housewifes schedule as well as imposing an extra strain on the teaching staff it costs money of course for the extra facilities a payment of 2000 wiil be made for using the hall for ten months while this may seem a steep price to pay particularly when there is no government grant on the money spent it must be remembered that the charge includes heat light and caretaking services ano the school board was fortunate in having such fine quarters available in the proper location a new school for 52 meanwhile work has at last begun on the new pubic school which is planned to be ready for next fall workmen from j b mackenzie son began preliminary work last week on the highway property which was purchased iron jack tost levels are being taken and excavation will start soon ft is a long slow process to get a school underway the new school was first conceived by the school board of 1949 taken to council in the early spring of 1950 voted by the ratepayers that june and over a year has been spent in acquiring property hiring architects and having plans submitted and approved to the dept of education a further delay was experienced when it was found that the cost would exceed the money orig inally okayed by the dept of municipal affairs and a new bylaw had to be drawn and submitted for appro val the debentures- still remain to be issued before the whole jegal process is completed however there is nothing now to stand in the way of rapid construction potpourri its been rather a hectic summer for the editorial department arid the column has been missing for two weeks well try to do better in future with operations and new babies behind us we welcome an old mem- ber of the staff back this week in the person some of the older residents could help out mr w d sproule of brantford who is anxious to get his birth certificate for pension purposes mr soule was born on augusf29th 1883 and needssome verification of birth date perhaps there is someone who went to school with him or knew him when lie was a boy and could help him with an affi davit if so it would do mr soule a favour if the party would contact the herald office- a garden pddity shown us by reg williams of the glen was a carrot which had grown around a large stone the roots had made three long fingers which appeared to be clutching the stone like a hand at least one local resident was browned off with the circus which played brampton recently she reports that after paying admission prrice she found that to obtain a decent seat there was anextra charge for a reserved seat the show did not start on time and was very short and outlandish prices wera char ged for pop and peanuts it- left a bad taste to be taken in so badly and will hurt any more legitimate show which which may beiothe neighbourhood at a later date fall fair saturday and the fair board is hoping their good luck 6f the past will hold out and bring a perfect day glen williams while having too cool a night for the western show had a perfect september afternoon last saturday for their fair many com ments have been made on the interesting social col umn in the herald businesses have been advertised for sale in a toronto paper recently the business scene is ever changing in town bill wright who managed the norval feed mill for several months has moved his family to streets- ville where he is managing a flour mill the norval mill is shut down at present we believe there was some confusion in a recent news story about the public school board not supplying books this year apparent ly we were misinformed and most of the text books are being supplied free to the students though they still buy their own scribblers and supplies the forth coming concert by adam
