i page 3 the georgetown herald wednesday sept 12 1951 parasites check hessian fly 1952 wheat should be better investigational work done to date this fall indicate a heavy pariaru- zation of the hessian fly pup this was the food news which prof h gobi provincial entomologist fran the ontario agricultural college brought to the county on hi visit on friday tast in other words the hessian fly pup which have not alread emerged have been found to have been attacketdby parasites add xe now dead prof goble also poin ted but to ui that the flies which have already emerged are not like ly to do rriuch damage since they must do their egg laying within three days after emergence and with no wheat sown the only piece for them to lay their eggs would be on small amount of volunteer wheat in some of the fields which have not as yet been plowed down tnu statement should not be interpreted as proof that the hessian fly will not be a menace to the 1952 crop in the first place further investiga tional work must be done in order to determine if the condition found in several 78161400 county fields holds true in other sections of the province to this end prof goble visited and took samples of stubble from several halton fields which were in wheat this year a further report will likely be available on this point in next weeks column we can well appreciate that a grtet many halton growers axe still undecided as to whether or not to sow wheat this fall as a matter of fact we know of no one who can- state definitely whether or not the hessian fly will be bad in 1952 history would indicate however that hessian fly is seldom if ever as bad the year following an out break there was rather serious damage by hessian fly in parts of essex- and kent a year ago in 1951 the damage in that section of the province was much less than else where in western and central on tario in short it would appear that parasites checked the trouble con sequently it would seem that halton growers can proceed wtyh some de gree of confidence to bow wheat this fall providing 1 they delay seed ing until sept 15th to sept 25th 2 they have a field which is in a good state of fertility 3 they have allowed sufficient time between plowing and seeding which should be two months- or more 4 they have a good firm seed bed and fin ally providing they drill in a good application of commercial fertilizer whfct fertilizer mixture to use is impossible to state without know ing something of jibe previous cropping history of the field if pre vious crops have shown a tendency to lodge it is an indication of an unbalanced food supply and 0168 or m212 at 200 lbs to 300 lbs pec acre is recommended where a good sod or a crop of sweet clover has been plowed down and particuarly if the field has rec ently received a good coat of man ure then 20 per cept superphosphate at 150 to 200 lbs per acre may be sufficient on the other hand if it is felt that a little nitrogen is desir able in order to start the new crop away then 42412 at 100 to 150 lbs per acre or 3189 at 200 lbs or laundry call zenith 13600 no toll laundry services 2166 it 300 lbs in any event phosphate is the important mineral in a commercial fertilizer to be sown with fall wheat in that it helps materially to develop suffic ient root growth to carry the young plants over winter if you arent prepared to use com mercial
