election in ontario announcement last thursday that the progressive- conservative government would seek a mandate on november 22 to remain in office for a maximum of an other five years was hardly a surprise for weeks there had been speculation and some of the daily papers had even predicted the election date a few days earlier the conservative party has been in office since 1943 when they coasted in on a landslide which dis placed a liberal administration the party was re election in 1945 and in 1948 led by george drew who has since resigned tchead the federal conservatives as of the county ccf are as vet unannoun ced i jjlood is needed announcement 6f a blood donor clinic in milton is worth consideration by georgetown people who ap preciate the good work which the red cross did in the war and the fine part the organization plays in peace time it is not generally known that patients in hospitals in hamilton guelph and milton may obtain free blood through this ked cross activity it is entirely possible that a donation of blood to the milton clinic which will he held a week from friday may actually be used for a patient from georgetown whether this be so or not you can be assured that this gift of blood will be put to good use whether it be in one of these hospitals or as far away as the korean battlefield where the cross of mercy is doing its usual good work it is some time since a blood clinic has been held locally and this gives georgetown people an opportun ity to take part in a great humanitarian work pot pourri main street continues to change in one week we have seen b f murfin close his furnaeuand sheet metal headquarters and move to torontosafe of one of the oldest clothing businesses p f blackburn to a man from toronto and opening of a new clothing store in part of the cordaro building plus an announce ment by the bell telephone company that they have bought the ruston property and will erect a building on the site for the new dial system certainly there is nothing static about the main street scene walter carpenter former high school principal here and now head of the dept of engish at the oac always enclo ses a nice little note with his subscription renewal and this year gives a pat on the back to the editorial and chatting when they are in as he puts it a long delayed reprint with pictures of the article on george town in the toronto telegram appears in this issue we hope last week the press was all ready to run when it was discovered that there was too- much local news and advertising to use it the herald will soon be known as the junior telegram if this keeps up for we also have a series of six cartoons which appeared in that paper plus a reprint of a feature writenip on ross mcgilvray who was chpsen as a typical carrier boy for tcly feature a miserable thanksgiving week end for travellers but nice for those who sat at home as thef editor did and enjoyed a quiet holiday last week was takeitonthechin week for the editor an unfortunate mistake was made in a last minute item in which we reported that mrs rather than mr wil- jimir kirby had had a severe stroke then a small item the council notes brought an irate property owner on to remind us that the health unit had not jjp apartrnent as unsanitary but had said- it ited as for another item in council news criticism by ci lyona about an expert- ropiskjemenm store owner sid silver vr wants it known that the sidewalk was not torn up with any idea of installing an oil tank in the store the fact of the matter was that when the old sidewalk was torn up mr silver who had at times thought of putting in oil heat to his building realized that this was a good opportunity and went ahead with it all labour was his own responsibility and he even supplied five yards of gravel and smoothed off the sidewalk base so that no extra work was caused the town staff while crj lyons had some technical grounds for his complaint that a committee can only spend 50 without bringing a matter before council as a whole in practice this is a hard rule to follow often jobs need doing and a com mittee chairman must take jehe xespensibility without delaying matters or burdening council with all the de tails as 16ng as townvbusiijes8 is handled speedily and without favouritism wecannot expect the exacoetter of the law to be followed r-
