broomhead the herald is printed each wednesday afternoon in the office on main street georgetown authorized as second class mail post office dept ottawa member of the canadian weekly newspapers association and the ontarioquebec division of the cwna f pae 8 v the editors cor ner rumours some good some bad a phone call to the head office of dehavillknd air craft in toronto con firmed the fact this week that the company contemplates no manufacturing m town it is true that dehavilland has leased considerable space in the old paper mill from william b ackerman ltd it will be used as storage space only with a dozen or so employees and will be no big addition to the busi ness life of town optimistic stories had been spread ing for several weeks about what the company planned to do here too bad that some of them couldnt berue there are rumours abroad about a possible new industry taking over the old glen woollen mill but to date it has been impossible for the herald to learn any thing at all about it lets hope that something mater ializes for it is a pity to see this huge building idle for several years and the resulting decay which always oc curs when a building is empty there is some prospect that a company known as hms associates which is at present developing a new hot water tank in the kippenker factory on john st may eventually employ some quantity of labour though at the present time the work is still in the experimental stage plans are being discussed by provincial paper for an addition to the plant but no definite decision haa yet been made library board has problems thanks are due j l lambert the new chairman of the library board for a new herald feature mr lam bert in this issue gives some thumbnail sketches of new books received at the library and has promised to keep us informed as new books are received perhaps it will encourage more use of this free facility which is impor tant to people in these days of inflated costs of living y at the last council meeting a delegation from the library board told about the difficulties under which they work and invited council to look over the building and see what repairs are needed there is some ques tion whether it is worth spending a considerable sum of money on a building which is much too large and re quires too rnuch upkeep for the purpose for which it is used it is a fact tht the present building cannot be used indefinitely unlesfe money is spent it will requre some thinking and planning both by the board and the council to do what is best and most economical in the long run whatever the case it will be necessary for money to be spent either on this or on some other building if a public library is to be maintained pot pourri we thought all news leads had been checked last week in our story of the royal visit after reporting that no local people were presented to princess eliza beth we find that brigadier and mrs j p girvan atten ded the 48th highlanders reception in university ar mouries and were among those presented to the princess and the duke of edinburgh not only did exopp constable vic smith make the front page of the daily papers but he also appeared in the movies vic was one of two mounties who stood guard during the presenta tion of queen marys carpet to the national galleries some local people saw him in a news reel at a city the atre nice to see ted maccormack back on the job again in his drug store after an illness that has kept him away since early summer we thought of mr maccormack when listening to a radio show sunday readers may remember a news item some time ago tell- ing of a lettei which he had received from mexico pro- mising a large sum of money if he would help a priso ner in mexico recover funds which were stored in the states the gangbusters radio program dramatized a true story in which a similar group of confidence men were trapped by the fbi apparently it is necessary to get them into the states before they can be brought to justice and the story told of the ruse used by an fbi agent to get the con men across the border where action could be taken don ford is the new junior at the royal bank replacing danny hewitt who left the bank to work at the paper mill attending brampton bus iness school this term are two georgetown girls marie armstrong who went to loretta abbey in tor onto last year and betty lou davis legion note dont forget the regular meeting on thursday night all members are urged to attend the meeting will only be an hour com rades so how about turning out poppy v is saturday nov ember 10th keep this day in mind and volunteer your services if pos sible in this connection we would like to mention that the money rai sed by this method has abswtately nothing t6 do with the branch funds although the branch contributes to it but is used to relieve any ex- serviceman who isneedy mrs t f grieve is in charge of this good work this year the remembrance day supper will be held friday evening november 9th in the arudi- torium com charlie day is again handling the tickets and will doubt- less be seeing the members about them in the near future trhe wa have consented p put on a turkey dinner this year so everyone had better be on hand card parties started monday night under the chairmanship of the sorts committee these card parties were a real success hist year and we hope that this fall will see continued good attendance at the last executive meeting it was decided to send along a don ation to- the provincial command scholarship fund this is a worthy cause and we can supply some of the details of it in the past few years provincial command has established each year a number of scholarships to help those children who would like to go to university but whose circumstances are such that their parents cannot afford to send them a student does not have to be bril liant to get one all that is required is that an applicant be a normal student whose marks are such that they warrant their attendance at an ontario univeisity this seems a very worthwhile cause and a dona tion there cannot be considered lost money who knows perhaps some day a ghs student will take advan tage of this project remembrance day will be on sunday november 1 1th and it is hoped this year that all vets will join in with the branch in paying their respects to those who made the supreme sacrifice in two great wars all the details will be avail able next week so keep the date in mind comrades and lets see the biggest parade yet we might say that we made a slight typographical error- in print ing our monthly bulletin this last time and had poppy day saturday november 11th instead of the 10th we think we changed most of them but there were a number of the notices went out with the wrong date sorry and just as a last thought how about all those who managed to make last months regular meet ing for the first time in years try to make it again thursday night the meeting will be short with re freshments afterwards this meeting will in all prob abilities see a report on the hockey situation by comrade alf sykes he seems to have the ball nicely roll ing and we expect some real hock ey from the boys would like to thank marsh timbers for the report of the meeting he left at the office for us and which appears in another section of the herald the number of boys register ing for the hockey season has not been as large as expected but no doubt many will still wish to reg ister from now on registrations will be handled at marsh timbers office in the norton bldg
