broomhead the herald is printed each wednesday afternoon in the office on main street georgetown authorized as second class mail postoffice dept ottawa member of the canadian weekly newspapers association and the ontarioquebec division of the cwna y the editor corner winniefs back the british elections with plenty of issues be tween the socialists and conservatives took the spot light from the ontario election last week it was a hot fight between the attlee government and the old party still led by winston churchill britains wartime leader and whatever a canadians political stripe there was a thrill to see churchill back at the helm again always v seemed an ungrateful tribute from a country which he led to victory in war tossing him out when the war was over though at this distance it is hard for an outsider to evaluate the english political scene the elections have shown that england is sharply divided on the type of government which its people de sire the industrial areas are socialist strongholds while the rural ridings are predominantly conservative and england is roughly divided fiftyfifty at opposite ends of economic thinking a daily newspaper humorist has suggested that it was the liberals who really won in england for they dont have to make any of the deci sions or face any of the criticism which any govern ment in power must at this critical time in britains his tory elections here too there is no sign yet of any major issues on the ontario political scene so far the campaign of all three parties has been clean and there has been no per sonal mudslinging and a minimum of party skuldug gery the conservatives seem content to rest on their laurels of the last few years with few promises of any new- policies walter thomsons liberals have scared up a few party planks including a hospital aid plan which has been getting raked over the coals by some papers because it suggests that although everyone will contribute in taxes those in most need of medical aid will have hospital preference the liberals have also made some promises about lowering the gasoline tax the ccf as must always be with a more radical party cannot concentrate completely on opposing the party in power but must also disassociate themselves with the other opposition party thereby losing some effect iveness in their arguments party leader e b jolliffe is making the most of government delay in helping municipal housing the policy for which was announ ced some m ago locally the conservatives are the only group that have shown signs of active local organization and pub licity their campaign room is well posted with adver tising material and the executive is planning some pub lic meetings however we expect the other parties will be on the job soon too in case some qf the newer resi- dents are in doubt candidates in halton are stan hall hornby farmer and present member in the legislature dr deans an oakville dentist who got a lot of liberal support in the last election and came close to ousting mr hall from office and ccf angus langille oakville plumber who is a newcomer to the game one of them will be haltons new mpp on november 22nd pot pourri adam gaw young canadian tenor who appeared recently in recital in georgetown as well as at knox anniversary services and at the lome scots church parade is proving quite popular in the district last sunday he was soloist at anniversary services in brrfrnp- ton presbyterian church turkey dinners are cer tainly proving popular this fall the first local one was at knox church last wednesday and some of the fu ture ones include dinners planned by st pauls church at norval bethel united church the local credit mas- onic lodge and the legion memorial dinner linotypist les clark reports that between legion and lodge af fairs he will eat no less than five turkey dinners in the next two weeks which is something of a record the local progressiveconservative organization has rented the new herald building until election day and has already dressed up the window with advertising material for candidate stan hall the poppy day com mittee is also having space in the show window next next week we believe one former georgetowner misses the old town a note from mabt hauptmann whose address is now r r 2 mt chesney says not to be too surprised to see him back in georgetown some day he reports picking 200 ripe
