with ontario elections over tomorrow interest shift to the local political scene for the next few nomination meeting this year is on monday december 3rd with the election set for the following monday it is always difficult to track down any rumours of candidatestobe before the meeting takes place in dications are that 1952 wont see any startling changes in the municipal scene no present member of council has indicated intentions of not seeking office so we can assume that most of them will have their hats in the ring again a former reeve jack armstrong is talking of seeking a council seat once again and we also hear that former deputy reeve james goodlet might be in terested fred mcnally who ran for council last year is also a prospective candidate whether there is a run for office or not there will be definitely an election on december i oth two years ago when a vote was taken on electing council by gen eral vote no mention was made of public school trus tees because at that time a board of education served both schools the next year georgetown joined north halton high school district and a public school board was recreated and as there is no provision for electing this board by anything but by wards this question is being submitted to ratepayers in order that the ward voting can be abandoned altogether the price of office in oakville one big difference between a city and a small town is the treatment of news and editorial material appar ently the oakville recordstar is preparing for the transition for last week that newspaper carried an item which was the cruelest and most slanderous form of criticism that we have ever read in a weekly newspaper in an editorial the newspaper blasted some present council members as waltzing matildas who wasted the time of the town and of their fellow councillors named the three singled out for abuse and asked the electorate to repudiate them at this years elections this practice is common in the cities where daily in our i shoe department we now have the largest selection of better grade christmas slippers and flight boots ever shown in our store silvers the signature of quality and integrity newspapers openly support certain candidates for office but we cant recall ever before seeing a small town newspaper becoming so personal in its editorials but then as we said oakville is preparing for city status and the oakville- editor is apparently willing to trade friendship and goodwill for readership perhaps this indicates the greatest difference be tween small and large municipalities the indifference to personal feelings rest assured that in georgetown as long as we are at the helm there will be no public castigation of municipal officials it just isnt cricket pot pourri with princess elizabeth and the duke of edin burgh safely home after their tour of canada we are still hearing sidelights about the trip which have a local significance for instance when v the royal couple vacationed at ste agathe quebec they were driven from montreal by sgt robert john son who is a brother of mrs fred schultz of town and a relative of mrs ken macdonald and miss florence anthony rcmp assistant commissioner m f e an thony is now in london with five mounties who form ed the princess bodyguard in canada they were in vited to visit britain by the princess and returned with her on the empress of scotland commissioner anthony travelled to london with the princess and duke in the royal train and was present at the official welcome home ceremony in fusion station the daily papers con tinue to carry rumours of other industries moving from windsor to the oakville district following the move of the ford assembly plant sometimes herald classi fieds get unusual results a local advertiser was sur prised to have a customer for a pipeless furnace adver tised for sale at downsview and the sale was completed to a herald subscriber there this week vou will note lome changes on the classified page up to date the small ads have been run under the heading new advertise ments this week it becomes a real classified page with ads grouped under their proper headings for mer georgetown dairyman riley brethour stopped for a chat at the herald office last week he is still liv ing at wilson heights and with a partner operates the real estate firm of brethour and morris in the city were oyer
