the counties of es sex brant elgin haldlmand hal- ton huron kent lambton lincoln middlesex norfolk ontario ox ford peel perth waterloo wel- land wellington wentworth and york the deer season was also closed in the courity of durham and the township of south monaghan in the county of northumberland the department received resolu tions from a majority of the county and township councils concerned re questing closure the season was originally opened because of the in creasing hazard to crops wood lots and travellers on highways caused by the increasing number of deer closure it is stated comes as- a result of the apprehension of rural residents over the prospects of hav ing deer hunters on their property persons who bought deer licen ces and now iind themselves un able to use them may get refunds application forms may be obtained from department officers and from licence issuers each application should be signed by a conservation officer pete migilwii voiced his opin ion of the closure in a recent issue of the telegiam he thinks it ra ther strange that the municipal act permits this vetoing by county councils he also believes that the deer will hao to be harvested soo ner or later he goes on to say that some time ago in the states of pennsylvaiu md michigan tliey had to be hai vested because they were ruining tin young hint tices and crops to such an extent that farmers were claiming damages from the counties pete clam- tnit most i a yeai old lilly line sometimes they haw tripl says that ther- u except for poachts deer population owi says that in thr be a big cry for the cry will fonii themselves well thats pete mcgillcns ver sion and a very good one at that as far as i am concerned it was a mistake to open the season on the general licence and i might add that a good many hunters that i talked with recently were of the same opinion sure we were all disappointed over the season clos ure but at the same time when we stop to think over the different an gles we get a different vfifc of the problem this is what could have hap pened here in southern ontario say for instance that 80010 deer licences were sold in ontario this fall to hunters perhaps 20000 deer were shot if so that would mean that 20000 licences should have been cancelled that would leave 60000 hunters with licences still valid suppose half of these were living within reasonable driving distance of southern ontario sure they would have been scattered all over southern ontairio but you can be sure the picture here in hal- ton county would have been grim at the present time i believe public school wws staff tea honours muiic graduation i on a recent afternoon a staff tea was held in the school to offer congratulations to the music super visor miss marion hepburn on her recent graduation the- pioh- lini i- for the counties or townships to regulate the seasons themselves wtlh just so many licences to be sold each year all this controversy over the deei is only encouraging a lot of decorations other than lights and fancy tree ornaments every year the whole family has a conehunting spree in the country occasionally we draw the ire of some country cousin but we usually try to secure them in wellwooded areas that are little frequented ws journey forth again when it comes time to gather evergreen boughs for our wreaths and other decorative purposes cswifsmf tsus cstjfrs nothing could be more typically canadian than the christmas tabtia centre we used last year with its pressed oak and maple leaves ana collection of cones some of ths cones can be dipped in bright red and bright green paint to add color to the arrangement this year ws lan to include evergreens to replace he leaves in cane you are interested in making the candle stick holders a couple of designs are illustrated cess macs mshrsrs to complete the slogan lets make it an evergreen christmas place markers are made from cones gather cones from the austrian pine larch and jack pine when they are dry leave them in a sunny window or on top of the furnace overnight the warmth will open tram three types of cone place markers that have been used are illustrated the whole family has s share in making them this adds to the interest and the anticipation for that day of days so quickly approaching it is tun drawing jm ones imagination to help make ths cones look as realistic as possible it is surprising how closely some ft resemble different types of birds when they are carefully selected placed and finished- all i hops is that you have as much fan in your house as we hsvs in our preparing
