sweep in the recenjt provincial elections premier frosts gov ernment will have things prettm much their own way with 79 members out of a total af 90 in the new legis lature the ccf is no longer opposition naxy and the liberals have taken over again though 7eats can hard ly be looked on as opposition defeat of both party leaders walter thomson and e b jolliffe leaves the two parties even more disorganized it is usual for someone to be the goat and we find public opinion about equally divided on the reasons for the conservative swep in this district ccf support has never been too jftrongand so it is that most people will tell you why they thinjhe liberals lost in spite of the fact that it was the ccf which had the main strength in the last parliament as we said opinion seems equally divided several blame it on walter thomson they disliked his flamboyant tactiosand apparent attempts at a smear campaign others lay the blame on the doorstep of the toronto daily star ceased to be a newspaper for a few weeks and became merely an advertising sheet for the liberal parity e have heard good liberals say that they were so sicken ed with some of the star propaganda that they deliber- tely voted for the other party and a few who would not go that far so just didnt vote at all this could be the explanation in and around tor onto certainly it would seem that a newspapers prop aganda could be a contributing factor to stan hall ex- lefiding his majority over dr deans from 100 to 2700 in two succeeding elections however it cannot explain the provincewide sweep for there are many parts of ontario where the toronto star does not circulate in any quantity our view is that the conservatives by choice or accident picked a happy time to further jheir govern- ship by appealing to the people when there were no real issues at stake and when the opposition parties in des peration had to create platforms which they could not wholeheartedly put across ixcause they did not sin cerely believe in them themselves the conservatives meanwhile could smugly sit back and keep repeating performances not promises while liberals vainly knocked themselves out promising lower taxes and more public service and while the ct tried to disasso ciate themselves from both old parties which in itself put two strikes against them whatever the reasons the fact is that in the ups and downs of politics the dial has completely switched from the day when mitch hepburn arid his liberals had things their own way in ontario it will switch again and five ten or fifteen years from now the lib erals the ccf or some as yet unformed party will be winning an election thats bow it is in a democracy and we wouldnt want it otherwise pot pourri iralways gives one a good feeling when money is found and returned to the owner last week r e mc kay brampton who is building a new house on the highway near the limehouse road stepped frpm his car in town and picked up a wallet containing 10 which had been dropped by mr mc bride of limehouse rjaced in the herald window it was soon claimed by the own er the same day bill chaplin reported finding twenty dollars in loose bills on the street by coincidence be fore he had a chance to advertise it he found that the money had been lost by a fellow workman merch ants are reminded that the heralds new christmas ad vertising book is jampacked with there was a race for council or not council had intended to submit a question to ratepayers asking their opinion on electing school trustees by general vote rather than by the present ward system it was later found that decision to have thia vote should have been made by october 1st and as this was not done the question could not be put to the people this year correcting an error in the account
