georgetown from midnight to 600 am from de 1st to march 15th the editors corner a firesafe christmas l r every year fire turns the happy christmas season into tragedy christmas fires occur because extra haz ards are brought into homes and public buildings a little knowledge of these hazards and how to prevent tragic fires will help keep christmas safe and merry a number of commonsense rules havebeen issued by the dominion fire prevention association which local fire chief harry savings has asked usto pass on to readers j the association cautions that christmas trees are highly inflammable and easily ignited keep them away from radiators and fireplaces dont use candles on them use only good lighting fixtures and be care ful of frayed wiring dont have tree lights on unless you are in the room if the circuit fuses blow you have too many lights and appliances on the circuit and this overloading can cause a fire in the walls speaking of toys the association recommends not to purchase any which are inflammable celluloid dolls toys and paper costumes are dangerous and so are toys which require alcohol kerosene or gasoline to generate power film projectors toy or adult should bear the underwriters laboratories or canadian stan dards association label it is dangerous people are re minded to set up electric toys and trains under the christmas tree in case there are people locally who do not know what to do in case of fire you are reminded that the town has an arrangement with the bell telephone com pany whereby a call to the the operator gets things in motion the operator presses a button which automat ically starts the two fire sirens in town there is also a hand signal at the fire hall if fire occurs people are reminded not to call the operator to ask where it is the local exchange is very good at calling such people as the police hydro and vol unteer firemen a number of people calling in can jam the lines and waste valuable minutes when this work is being done cars off the street please i last year the town council passed a bylaw which was aimed at providing snow removal as promptly as possible after a storm the bylaw requires that letween midnight and six in the morning no car should be parked on a street in town in the past the snow plow has often been hampered when making its rounds by cars which make it impossible to clear the street its full width nine times out of ten it means that the plow detours around the car throwing up a wall of snow which makes it impos sible to move the car without some shovel work cars have been known to sit in one spot on the strdet for weeks at a time after this making a traffic hazard and more confusion with every snow storm like all bylaws the bylaw has teeth in the form of a fine for not obeying in the last week fourteen drivers have parted with some money through neglect ing to heed the bylaw in spite of notices in the herald no one likes to be fined and the police dont like tin fine you but that is their job to enforce bylaws so dont blame them dont blame council either for they are trying to do their best for everyone it is realized that in some cases there is some hardship for car own ers who do not have a garage they rrnjist then do the next best thing and find a space on a vacant lot or some where off the street proper to park their cars at night during the winter months potpourri we suppose others beside the 362 people who phoned noticed the odd engagement notice in last weeks herald we can assure you that conventional engage ment wordings havent changed and parents do not an nounce the management of their daughter blame it on the christmas rush last week was a bad one all around for the herald in another news item we called mrs cordon kidney mrs george kidney and an nouncement of a turkeyyouknowwhat in an adver tisement had the police in a dither as well as a few well intentioned folk who disapprove of the youknowwhat it was said humorously that last friday there were more people in church at one time than ever before the reason of course sunday school concerts in the four protestant churches a concert always gets a full house always makes us wonder how so many people will send their children faithfully to sunday school yet seldom suppor the church either spiritually with their presence or financially with their money churches certainly arent financed on sunday school collections we wonder sometimes too if those who are regular do- nators to the church realize- that expenses there have climbed too your yearly collection ten years ago is only worth half as much now its a good time to re view your givings much as we try to keep up with directory i 1 lucky strike open bowling nielsen the chiropractor drugless therapist 37th year of
