archdeacon thompson expressed concern at the in creasing tendency for canada to break away from our strong ties with the british empire we agree with his idea that the appointment of a governorgeneral should be given to an lnglishman preferably one with royal blood or one whose achieve ments have been as outstanding as viscount alexander who has done such a good ob during his term of office it is not a question of the capability of the new canadian nppointee rt hon vincent mursey inhere u no canadian who has served his country better or who is more qualified for the job no one can have any personal animosity to the appointment but everyone has the right to protest any canadian holding the post its the same with royal visits wc know thit is our democratic system advances the king has less and less personal authority and yet his presence as the titular head of all parts of the british empire gives a solidarity which no othri empire has been able to ach icve during the centuries we should not expect to have a canadian making a royal tour on the king s behalf and wc should no more expect to have 1 canadian rrp resenting the king in this country it would not be too late lor the canadian govern ment to reconsider their move and ink that thr govt r nor general appointment be reconsidered surely brit am has enough major problems facing her today with out giving her cause for alarm that canada is loosening the ties of empire farmers and their labor problem impressed with a letter to the lditor 111 a recent edition o the glolx- 6v mail a district farmer sks us to reprint it wc are not enough of an agriciiltur il ec onomist to make comment on the letti r one way or the other perhaps there art farmers in the dihtrict who would like to air their own opinions on the matter and we remjnd them that the pages of the i ler ild an 1 s s s open for their comment i lerc is the letter which was written 1 j ii re it nie of fergus i was amused at readingan artich under the h t ing farmers said to blame for hired man trouble in which mr davison chief employment for the national employment services told the farmers that qgricultur- ists in thii country ajre still in the horse and huggy das when it comes to dealing with labor i would like to tell mr davison the reason why the farmers cannot go into the labor market and offer wages and hours with time and a half fpr overtime which woud draw good men away from other industries agriculture m the most important induatry but it can t go on and produce eggs and pork at less than cost of production aa we are doing at the present time it is true potatoes and beef are abnormally high t the present time the reason is thnt in past years the price of both got down so low that farmers were forced to reduce production if they wanted to remain solvent it is also true that we farmers could easily have brought production up high enough to have forced prices down to a reasonable level hilt we have a fear from past ex perience that if we bring production in any line up to a level that creates a slight surplus down goes the price to a disastrous level the rule of supply and demand setting the pncetrf any article is neither good for the consumer nor produ cer it has a tendency to make prices go in cycles either unreasonably low or unreasonably high what the farmer needs is a stable market so he can go ahead and produce knowing that he will get a price that will enable him to offer wages and hours that will draw good men from other industries and hold them on the farm strong protests hve been lodged by caledon residents about the threatened closing ot the cam nil- way station there caledon is on the hamiltonbarrie line which puses through georgetown and has two passenger trains dally one from
