surprising jn view of the cost of the private lyoperated collection which has been the rule ever since garbage collection was arl to the tax rate several yeara ago at present roughly nine hundredliomes enjoy weekly collection in the winter months and twiceweekly collection all summer main street has twice weekly collection all year round at a total cost of 4200 for the year this figures out at about 9c a house per week can we do it that cheaply at first glance the anwer is yea if a private individual can do it for that and make a profit surely the town can do it more cheaply but examination of the facts does not bear this out the contract is held by a firm which has a number of trucks and a supply of man power which allows certain employees to be used on the garbage collection with other em ployees available for parttime work when required the firm has hod several years ex- peience at the job and has given good service rarely have there been complaints and rain or shine the garbage truck has made its allot- may we hope there is speculation that finance min ister abbott fn his budget speech later this month will announce reductions in the tax on electrical goods georgetown is particu- larly interested in this because of the slacken ing in production in our largest industry which has caused short hours for all employees and a marked reduction in the number of men and women employed in the three smith and stone plants exorbitant taxes on refrigerators stoves and radios this last year has forced prices up to such a point that considerable buyer resis tance throughout canada has put producers in a serious position to move present stocks retailers have resorted to drastic price cuts in many cases making no profit at all on the sale this is not a heathy situation a retailer who has had to clear goods without profit is not anxious to stock up wjth any more whole salers finding they cannot get dealers to stock their norma supplies are not buying them selves and so factories are not running at capacity and have had to reduce work hours and cut staff this of course affects the in come of worker and makes them less able to pot poum as a windup to their years activities he new ladies curling club entertained mem bers of the royal canadian club of toronto to an afternoons curling and a social time after wards the ladies had met the toronto curlers at a bonspjel in brampton a few weeks ago a note from the lords day alliance reminds their friends in georgetown that mr f l crawford wil be calling in town within the next few days final results of the county christ mas seal campaign held by haltontb and health association shows a total of 8272 col lected in the campaign in our roundup of florida vacationers recently we neglected to mention that magistrate k m langdon was also down south in cse he is wondering who was in the car that honked at him in traffic in st petersburg it was mr and mrs harold cleave they were stopped at a traffic light when t noticed v familiar ear but before ted rounds regularly and efficiently it is argued that at certain times of tha year the town ia somewhat overstaffed and garbage collection will provide fillin work for these men in their offtime but we must rea lize that garbage collection is something which must go on day after day week ofterweek suppose the town uses all employees fulltime during certain seaaona it simply means that someone else must be hired to collect garbage at these times or someone elae must be hired to do the mena wfsrk while they are collecting garbage either case means more wage payments front the public treas ury can the town hope to maintain o truck allocate time of regular employees for the work and pay parttime help any cheaper than the present contract councila first move must be confir med by a bylaw amending the present garb age bylaw before thia is done perhaps the town fathers will reconeider a move made in good faith by them in the interests of econ omy at the time of striking the tax rate when apparent economy aometimea overahodowa other considerations purchase the high priced goods equally im portant is the secondary effect on people not directly connected with the industry and whose own wages have not suffered they become cautious delay buying not only elec trical good but everything else and first thing we know a recession is in the making had georgetown been located any where but within the toronto radius the smith ac stone layoffs would have had a cat astrophic effect on the towns economy as it is up to the present any tnan out of work has been able to become employed at malton where the vast avro plant seems to require an inexhaustible supply of labour how long this could keep up is problematic for even the larg est plant must have it saturation point what could happen to georgetowns retail business property values and potential for new residents if we cannot continue full employment is some thing we dont like to think about let us hope that mr abbott outs us on the road backto the good old days of a year ago when there was work here and plenty of it and our men did not have to commute to malton to earn their daily bread mr langdon could recognize them the signals changed and they lost him in the traffic our first major boob since converting the small ad column to a classified one occurred last rweek a house advertised for sale by len rayner was mistakenly placed in the for rent column mrs rayner reports she was quite wtern out answering the phone for the next few days and didnt realize how many people in georgetown are looking for a house tojrent those who heard adam gaw in his recital at knox church last year may have noticed that this young canadian tenor was soloist at the pop symphony in toronto a week ago friday biueafas canadas john mnccormack we heard him sing a group of irish numbers and were much impressed by his dear and beautiful voice which reproduced particularly well on the radio lets hope this will be dtex beginning of a bright musical future emychiwue t movie version of a popular novel a theatre patron watched in surprise as a dog aeafced
