building which is one of the towns great est assets there has been some talk of a com plete new library buildinir and while this would have some definite advantages the majority of citizens would rather see the old site kept and the building put in better shape there is some historical significance in retain- nig the old church building which was deeded to the tovn in perpetuity providing it re mained a public library perhaps newer resi dents of town will not know that it is the for mer congregational church the immediate need for renovations has been pointed out forcibly to council by the library board which has had several meet ings with council and the property committee it had been hoped by the board that council new high school coming georgetown council action in being the first to approve north halton high school board building plans was gratifying to board members at time of writing acton has join ed georgetown in giving the goahead sign for new schools at georgetown and acton and addition of a gymnasium at milton word is expected this week from milton elsquesing and nassagaweya which are the other three municipalities forming the district the school problem is one which has been well aired in north halton these past five years at various times the merits of one two and three schools has been discussed there have been motions and amended motions dis cussions with councils and vaith the dept of education until the final decision by the pot pourri thanks go to fred helson for the three pictures of the juvenile hockey team which appeared in last weeks paper fred followed the team to lindsay and went to considerable trouble to get some good shots- of the boys and his interest was appreciated inciden tally for the first time we used a ncwtypc of plastic plate which has been developed and is being used by such city papers as the london free press and guelph mercury the new pro cess is easier on the pocketbook and pictures are about half the price of the established mr thod of stereos apologies for an apology it was mrs orval rayner not mrs len ray- ner whose house was advertised for rent not for sale as it should have been the old herald office has been rented by henry hel- font who established a clothing store here in he cordaro building last fall the new ten ant will be moving into the building later this month decision of dominion stores to close their store here leaves the adjoining building vacant also it has not been rented as yet the bell telephone will make it a threep some when they vacate their present build- ing next year for couhrerecjhcanyou teach week might consider increasing the debenture debt in order to make all improvements at once an expenditure of 25000 or over however the board realized also that the already heavy debenture debt must be kept from any further increase because of the forthcoming public school loan and a possible new high school in the next few years the board is satisfied with councils offer to take 1 000 from cur rent taxes and add this to the 1952 grant and members are already planning how the extra money can best be used the suggestion has been made that a competent architect be hired to prepare a mas ter plan which can be carried out over a per iod of years this would appear to be be a sensible method of approach for money can be wasted if the job is done piecemeal and a definite plan will give the blueprint for geor getowns library of the future board to drop any idea of closing any school and supplying adequate modern buildings for all three towns once council approval is given it be hooves the school board to waste no time in laying their plans before the department hiring an architect and calling for tenders for the new buildings georgetown is faced with inability to house all high school students in another year or two as enrolment will grow rapidly acton is in the same position or worse for in that town the high school board rents prem ises from the public school which are needed for elementary education it is to be hoped that the ntw schools- will be built and ready for occupancy for the 1954 school term est developments in firefighting methods new men from the city we were plea sed to see an end to the garbage discussion at council monday and think council did a wise thing- in dropping plans to have garbage col lected by municipal employees we could see nothing but trouble ahead for a municipal col- lection s i never struck us until we watched twlo high school girls perform the charleston at the t commencement last wed nesday that the dance will some day be con sidered a folk dance it seems such a few years ago that we watched people dancing it ser iously and now along with the black bottom and the big apple it is passing into the free advertising so in the future if you have any news by all means five it to us were always glsd to have it and wr never have been forced to draw the line too closely but if there happens to be an event in the future that you wish publi cised please see the editor that is his department as we sold before we only work here and as a last word on this we also have heard that a number of people feel that there has been too much legion news devoted to the hockey this winter to that well merely may that if anyone comes along with sn idea ilka sponsoring kid hockey and further putting it oveit the way alf scotty and the reat of the boys did then they wll art as much credit as the hock ey nnvi had- in fact while we are on thr subject of the legion note wed like to say that we arc always open
