of the cwjijt i i schools must be built perhaps readers are growing tired of hearing so much in news and editorial col umns about the need for new high schools but the heed exists and until something is done about it you will liior more nnd more about the problem problem it is because the future educal tional standards in all three towns in nortlft halton are going to suffer and suffer badly if a building program cannot be undrrtuken soon the school board cannot be blumed for delays in a building program it is over 1 year since the twelveman board composed of representatives from the five municipalities concerned decided to build new schools in georgetown and acton councils individ ually and collectively have been told the ficti three of the councils have oppreved the plan two have turned it down and elsquesing mid nassagaweya must share the blame when the fateful day comes and the schools cannot ac commodate all the pupils a few years ago it was easy to sit buck and say someday we will need new schools but we have a few years ofgrace yet time has now run its course acton has one year more to use the building owned by the public school and then will have no ac commodation at all what about ceorge town next september according to principal one hundred years of history no onfc is unaware by now that st georges anglican church is this month eel ebrating its centennial for some months a large sign over the church driveway has proclaimed this and a series of advertisements in the herald has drawn attention to the fact a series of five special sunday services commenced this week with two former rec tors rev percival mayes and rev dawson harris as preachers later in the month other former ministers of the local parish will preach canon t g wallace archdeacon william burt canon wase as well as canon mc collum who is a georgetown old boy other distinguished visitors will include rt rev w el bagnall who will officiate at the dedication of a new reredos window altar linen and altar vases and rt rev george n luxton bishop of huron this will be a particularly paper within a paper this week marks the first in a scries of papers within papers readers will find a new publication written by high school students within this issue it is several years since the high school has published a year book many will re member the successful editions put out in the 30s and it has always been our hope that these could be revived as an encouragement to some future pub lication the herald has offered a space twice monthly for a high school paper with the hope that eventually this will grow into an indepen- pot pourri an envelope postmarked godench and addressed to the herald encloses a clipping from the london free press with this cryptic note is georgetown missing the boat signed mac the clipping tells of in dustrial expansion in the london district with an american steel company buying 21 acres at wallaceburg and a shoe firm locating in st thomas georgetown keeps hoping and with council and the chamber of commerce both on the job well have news yet bet a telegram proofreaders face was ted when he saw this amemorial plague was unveiled yesterday in the shadow of two pear trees honouring dr saunders founder of canadas xpeririiental farm system patricia vance has recently joined the bank of commerce staff and margaret hoare helson is back on the job again marg and fred spent the summer in chicago he working with his old firm baxter labs and she at an office job fred has retur ned to his second year studies at osgoode hall not too early to start planning your cos- times for the lions halloween dance which ills year conies right on die day thisparty lambert a forecast shows that the high school will have to have one new teacher and one new classroom and the yarater that it it mosvjikely that another new teacher and an- othejnew classroom will have to lie added with the present trend ui higher educa lion uwuy from a rigid course of study num erous options create problems of dovetailing students ancicourses which complicate the high schoorpicture hie drawing up of a timetabe to give each student the most sub jects he desires when all students are under one roof is a complex one io do this when some stucjents must commute from one or two other locations will make an impossible situa hon and seriously affect the whole teaching set up at the school already there is overcrowding in the shop and home economics rooms at milton hiese are two advantages of the high school district which as years go by will become so restricted as to make them relatively valueless to georgetown and acton students every parent who has or will have chil dren of high school age should consider it a duty to plague their elected representatives in the five municipalities until some action is taken we have already dallied too long und every month that goes by is one month more when north haltons educational standards will suffer notable duy for archdeacon ihompaon as the bishop of huron first served as a choir boy in mount torest under georgetown s rec tor rev j m maxwell of norval will be another of the special preachers in process of printing and expected to be ready the middle of next week is a centennial booklet it has been painstakingly prepared by w r bradley and is profusel illustrated with pictures most of which have been taken by choirmaster bruce harding the booklet will le a real addition to georgetown s histor ical lore ond will le in demand not only by the church people but by townspeople in gen eral it contains pictures of past rectors heads of organizations and groups as well as beau tiful pictures of the church and rectory ond has been written in a bright and interesting fashion dent production the present format has the advantage of not costing the high school a cent as well as getting students used to the art of writing for a paper ibis first edition is well put together and contains some interesting news ond articles we have high hopes for it in future and hope that it will encourage all students to pay more attention to their english composition writ ing con be funand it con be educational we hope that every student at ghs will be a con tributor at one time or another is more and more becoming an institution in georgetown and 1952 should see a record crowd a thousand people almost didnt get invited to a united church sunday school rally in milton when rev john smith asked us to do a rush job on some small pos ters advertising this event we complied and pushed them out wedneday you see mr smith had to distribute thembefore sunday to ministers of the 31 sunday schools in halton he started out wednesday night at biallinn- fad counted out the correct number for mr gibb there jumped in his car and started home back in georgetown he was minus the parcel and the awful truth was realized that he had left the package on the running board of his car no trace qf the parcel was found when he retraced his tracks luckily there was still time for the herald to push out ano ther order on thursday morning the ire land family takes to banking friends of for mer bank of commerce manager
