broomuead tie herald is printed each wednesday in the office on main street georgetown authorized as second class mail post office tept ottawa member of the canadian weekly newspapers association and the ontarioquebec division of the cwna do we tiave to j3row 1 so often we hear it said you cant stand sbll you must either go forward or back ward in this part of ontario particularly we seem to be ever looking for more industry more houses bigger towns and yet we some- tunes wonder if we are on the right track to concentrate too heavily on making everything bigger for bigness is not necessarily synomo- mous with bestness take a town for example georgetown to be specific can such a town of 3500 pop ulation continue that way for generations and continueto be a good town without growing anrfgrowing until it has 5000 people or ten or fifteen thousand the problem is complex because it is human nature never to be satisfied the aver proper balance important what is important for a town is to have the proper balance between industry and homes we have heard half a dozen informed speakers say that a town must depend on in dustnal assessment to carry the load ftfr resi dential areas which do not pay their way un der our present tax set up we have been warned that georgetown must not become solely a residential area for people who work at malton or oakviue if that happened we would be burdened with ex orbitant taxes for schools roads sewers the cost of which should be shared by the industry employing all these people it is then extremely necessary that geor getown and esquesing take the advice of a gov ernment man mr nash who spoke at the pot pound if you saw some glum faces at the her aid office last week it was a sign that the new year had started xtfi bad all around lino typ ist ls clark was down wrth the flu along with his wife and their two kiddies and on tuesday the hootype machine which sets the bulk of what you read in the paper decided to go on the blink repairmen from the com pany in toronto were unavailable until thurs day but through the kindness of our neigh bouring publisher in acton we were able to use his machine and get most of the copy set we had a young one at home with the flu too on the same night that our oit furnace decided to act up then another and still another took the same ailment though luckily not at the same time printer reg broomhead s wife also came down with the flu and to add a final tourh the hot water tap m the kitchen at home refused to wo anyone th fanviy of five knows how much this is needed for the washing but this is another wqekl the linotype is fixed the flu bug has moved on to some other victims and the herald office is perking alongon high it s welcome home to jessie wilcox who last week joined the bank of commerce staff after living in ham ilton for several years back on main street again is bob harris who since leaving farnells staff has operated his own store at stewart- town and since selling out to ken wilson has been managing mcclures home furnish ings branch in muton bob is now employed with albert hills at the budget market slippery slushy roads over the wteekend kept age human being constantly looks for some thing more m hfe and in a money economy he concentrates on more money with which he can buy more things and raise his living standard as he grows older he transfers this to a desire for his children to have more than he had it is a perfectly natural inclination and one which we all possess m varying de grees 7 so it is with a town we seek a bigger town fo that we can have more civic services more factories in which to employ more peo ple who willneed more civic services and just as the individual may find that more of the worw s goods acquired by hrm self does not necessarily mean greater happi- ness so can a town find that being bigger does not always mean being better mayor s inaugural dinner and form some plan ning board which can take hold of the problem and seek the best solution for even now we are to some extent just such a boarder com munity a planning board could determine the per fect balance of industry and private homes and could give sound advice to councils about what fo seek and it would not have to mean that geor getown must grow and grow to city propor tions the proper assessment balance in a town of three or four thousand can make it a fine town and it can continue to be a fine town as long as its citizens are happily employed and can afford individually and collectively to buy most of the things they want everyone in georgetown who hadn t urgent business elsewhere it was nice though to see some snow which gave the kids their first opportunity of the- season to try out sleighs toboggans and skis stilt
