division of the cwj7a 5 open season on merchants we never fail to be surprised at what merchants wnl fall for in the guise of adver tising not that we pretend the newspaper is the only form of advertising in georgetown far from it the merchant who knows the value of advertising uses handbills on occa sion billboards donations to local organiza uons in the form of advertising space in book lets goods for prizes etc window displays i h v tn t into neighbouring towns he uses ft combination of these recog nized forms of advertising to get his results but from time to time along comes a scheme which smellsof high pressure sellings and every time a few businessmen are caught in the enthusiasm of the moment vv e have seen them come and go glib promoters who sell school book covers telephone cards his torical books and every so often the current one of advertising in a specialty publication and this time there is a new angle in a magazine which according to its contents could onl be read by policemen a sugges tion has been made that the town should take a half page ad at a cost of 60 along with this of course goes some town history pic tures of the council etc of course he town doesn t have to buy the ad the information will still appear though we would judge in somewhat more condensed form we haven t too much quarrel with the promoters they are se ling a 4egitimate pro duct but we still wonder why merchants are tempted to spend money on advertising for such a specialized grbup as ontario police men to read the only possible value would be to give this ad as a donation for carrying a story about georgetown- awjrk vain- of this as council decided when they turned down an ad extremely negligible friends if you must spend such money vrfiy not spend it in jiome way which if not of direct benefit to you is at least of some local se give an extra couple of dollars to the tb campaign or the lions oub the hockey club or any of a hundred worthwhile public activities or put an extra coat of pamt on your store give your employees a bonu buy yourself a new suit or go out and have an evening on the town and if you really want to advertise use the money in some way where you can at least see the original expenditure come back poll tax would raise money rising costs of municipal administration makes councils cautious in expenditures and each year at this time when the tax rate is about to be struck there is much discussion on cutting comers the sad fact is that there are so few cor ners to cut and as in private business it sometimes pays a council to increase income last year hog- tax licence fees were consider ably boosted and a few extra dollars added to hie municipal treasur this year we would suggest the council investigate the adoption of a poll tax such taxes are quite common in larger centres and at least one halton town oakvilie uses it the tax is levied on single men who do not pay taxes as owners or tenants its purpo c is to collect a small sum from such people who do not otherwise contribute to the mun pot pourri there is a chance that georgetown girls pcband will be a feature of this year s lions international convention m chicago the girls have been approached by representatives of lions in this zone and if plans work out they will play at the convention on two previous occasions in philadelphia and new york city the pipe band has been a part of the canadian parade a christmas card which ken mcmillan received from pat patterson had its aftermath last week when mr patter son was made an honorary member of the canadian horse show association at their awards dinner at the royal york pat went to a lot of trouble at christmas when he sent ken a picture of himself in gentlemans turn out attire driving an old nag locust lane nell and declared himself a threat in future horse dhows ken not to be outdone ar ranged with lance rumble chairman of the dinner to reciprocate and the incident caused a lo of merriment at the dinner people of all churches will regret to know that arch deacon thompson may be retiring as angli can rector later this year the archdeacon is the ql o g gwgy ytf been here since 1932 his associations in town where he has been prominent in ser ictpal treasury it is not exorbitant and while small to the individual could be quite large in total without checking the act we believe this tax law appliestonly to men however with emancipation pf females so complete in this century that practically every single girl is gainful y employed ccmncil could at the same time investigate its application to ladies also especially in a town like georgetown theie could be considerable extra revenue here too still mother r which night stind invcstigat ng would he a thoroi ministry that he and mrs thompson will continue as georgetown residents stories of flood and gale damage on the english east coast have caused anxiety in many george town homes for relatives in the emblem the cross and the crown mr smith pointed out that we could not claim cither of these as our own unless we entered fully into their real meaning of vicarious unselfish giv ing f ourselves for
