the bacon show and the junior farmer educational displays featured the eighteenth annual halton seed fair held in the milton town hall on saturday ihe grain and seed show was the smallest on record in the opinion of a number of tho officers the small entry in the seed show is the tesult of last summers drought others suggested that jihe small entry was due to lack of interest and the tendency of the great maj ority or halton farmers to traffic in ungraded seed over the line fence if more evidence is needed to prove the folly of this practice rt certainly came to light at the seed fair on friday one prospec tive exhibitor brought in an entr of small seeds on arrival in mil ton he got ms control sample cer tificate in the mail to his amaze ment the report of the plant pro ducts division of the canada de partment of agi culture showed that the sample contained 680 weed seeds to the ounce or if tie sample in question had been sown at the rale of 10 lbs per acre it would mean the distribution of 108 800 weed seed to the acre or nearly thicc to the square foot to the tasu il obserei the prospective in t ippcarcd la be of good quality as onl when a magnifying irds legion notes tion in this province are within a 100mlle radius which makes the scheme feasible whh spring and summer holidays coming probably a number of men could be induced to take their holiday and do the outlying districts as a sort of bus men s holiday it should be possible io peddle 100000 tickets in the course of a few months figure that out at even 25 cents a time and you have a sweet start for any pro ject the above idea is in pretty crude indefinite form but rt could be worked put secondly public subscription there is a good field for this but strictly limited we should judge on the basis of winnipeg flood and overseas flood relief funds it should be possible to raise say 5000 this way another subscription campaign would be in the form of a special names committee working on the same principle as that adopted by victory loan drives etc where names are carefully screened and special people are selected to ap proach certain indrviduals who it is felt could be- persdaded to give more substantial contributions in this category too might be an un tapped source of contribulitin in the heads of various industries who although not resident in the com munity might be willing to try and intexcsttheir board of directors iry contributing to a cause w hich would benefit so many of their local employees this is of course sheer conjecture on our part and we have no idea how it would be to get hold of the most clear and comprehensive survey of the situation costs locations etc w hich was compiled some years ago by a local engineer ed wilson for another interested organization the whole idea while a wonderful one is a terrific project and could only be done we feel by the active participation of every organization and individual m town working together to start the ball rolling rather than by soliciting individual dona tions the idea has been forwarded that a combination of organiza tions get together form a commit tee and start a money making scheme that will net a really large return we would judge that the only way to do that would be a monster ticket draw of some sort for a really huge prize so big that rt could capture the imagination of the buying public and we need not point to the money making poten tialities of a draw of any size of course we are only too well aware that a section of ourj population do frown strongly on gambling pro jects as a money raising project to these people we can only add that we agree that there might be more desirable ways of raising the cash necessary but that lo do it the hard way raising bits here and there by public subscription con certs etc would take so long that our children s children would stilt be without a swimming pool here a lucky draw for a car might be tie key to starting the bank roll let us say two or three organi zatlohs took the gamble and bought a car to be raffled to make the tickets legal so they could be sold anywhere they could be also used as admission lo some event a gar den party or show of some sort when the car is purchased you have two alternatives either hire professionals to take it about who will expect at least a 35 per cent cut of the gross or handle it vol untarily well say that in these organizations there is a combined membership of five to six hundred of this number possibly an outside ttgure of 50 per cent would be will ing to devote part time to selling tickets the committee could then set up a duty roster and get a chart made up for each week for the nee essary number of weeks of the campaign i c messrs a b c and d are on 11 to 7 shift this week they take the car out to district 1 then rotate your groups so that no one group is taking on the job more than a maximum of two das in the entire campaign the boys on shift work could take the more distant places while tho volunteers who work days could take care of the nearby centres we ition 11 u ing hun own in liv idii il methods mi finilly not tiy suiously e tome to the bi nn child of the fiitnd
