citizens will be eligible to vote in the august 10th federal election according to preliminary estimated by returning officer p w croke of milton in the june 1949 election 81 per cent of the 23 95j- registered voters cast their ballot the november 1951 provincial election showed 2500 more voters but a decrease of 2 000 in those voting enumeration in the county will end this saturday and a prelunln ary list posted in each p3lhn- sub division on monday voters should heck lo make sure their name ap pears on this preliminary list all three halton candidates are already campaigning although off cial nomination day is not until july 27th to date liberal candi date murray mrphail is getting the mo outside support with the sit ting member hughes cleaver active ly working on his behalf and prime minister st laurent scheduled for a speaking engagement in oakville this rriday rainy weather affects hay drying corn planting frequent showers are making it extremely difficult for halton far mers to make much progress with seasonal work rain gauges reveal that in may precipitation in the ap pleby district in nelson township was five inches and at hornby 5 8 inches to date that is june 18th the central portion of the county lias received an additional 1 75 in ches in the month of june as a result only a very small percentage of halton farmers have their corn planted more unfortunate still is that little progress has been made to date in the handling of the hea y hay crop yields taken in a number of fields reveal that the tonnage green weight ranges from 8 89 to 1177 depending on the fer tilization programme etc while a few fields have been baled weather i id soil conditions have been far from conducive to proper curing and we cant help but wonder what the ttmditioi of the hay will be like when the bales are opened crass silage on increase actually the only people making much progress arc those who are putting in grass or legume silage even in this field progress is limi ted due to the heavy tbnnage per icre it does not take a very large field to fill the average silo we also note some are using a preservative while others do not this would seem to indicate that a great deal of research wor still remains to be done on xhib subject research work to dale- indicates- that where the mixture to be ensiled is high in legumes a prescvalive is to be re- coimtaended it is also our opinion in a season such as we have ex peri enced this year where the legumes contain a high percentage of mois ture that a preservative such as barley meal is to be preferred over molasses we have noticed that some of the upright silos arc run ning rather badly as we see it this can only mean the loss of at least a portion of the molasses furthermore we can t help but feel that the barley meal would absorb some of the surplus liquid a caf eteria feeding test conducted at the ontario agricultural college last winter also strongly indicated that the cattle when given free choice of various lots ct grass or legume silage preferred that ensiled with barley meal over all other ipreser vatives tested when the halton bus party visited the frank jacobs farm near armada in michigan on june 0th 9tto filling was in pro gress at this point they were us ing or planning to use both liquid an dry molasses phe mixture be ing ensiled was bout fifty fifty of alfalfa and brome grass inciden tally for some reason or other mich igan farmers appear to get better catches of brome grass than we do here in ontario even their first year stands contained a goodly per centage of the grass in question economics of barn drying hay a recent release by department of agricultural economics at the ontario agricultural college on the econo of barndrying of hay is very timely tt fshowever based on only one years research and consequent lv can only be con sidered a progr ss report it is ba sed on information provided by q farmers as to costs of constructing and operating 31 barhdriers used in 1952 while far from being con elusive the release in question is thought provoking to say the least it is generally realized that field cured hay is subject to considerable loss of leaves the most valuable part of the hay because it must be stored at a moisture content of 20 per cent whereas hay witii a higher moisture content retains the leaves at the oac side by side swaths were baled as field cured and barn dried hay some months later all bales were weighed the rec overy per acre through bant dry nij was an exta 200 lbs or about 5 per cent of the hay nutrition analyses marked bales from these two swaths were retrieved from the mow after storage for nine months and samples from these bales were analyzed for protein and carotene the results on a moisturefree or dry matter basis indicate no differ ence in protein retention in this particular trial but do show con siderably less loss of carotene in the barndrying than 4n the field curing as a matter of fact the barn dried hay showed 13 3 milligrams of carotene per pound against 4 6 in the field cured this of course ties in with the greater loss of jeaves in the field cured hay the study is beiig continued and two years results should provide more reliable information on the points mentioned and also on the- actual feeding alue as revealed by smoo ijep qiv ssai sufpaoi mri we have what you meed m lumber
