in which we are now engaged in the next few week therefore i shall discuss some b the problems facing canada as a whole and halton county in parti cular and deal with my party s platiorm and the election issues as the arise thi progressive conservative party has acuvtcd the challenge to aggressive and positive action in fac int th problems of this county and laying down a program designed to deal with the needs of the people by straightforward and immediate tction the progressive conservative party platform in brief is 1 contributory health insurance in co operation with the provinces 2 tax reductions of 500 000 000 yearly 3 sales and excise tax exemptions for municipalities 4 dominion provincial confer ence to revise tax system 5 reduction in the cost of govern ment by increased efficiency 6 restoration of the supremacy of parliament 7 senate reform 8 new laws to curb communism 9 restoration and expansion of world markets 10 fair floor prices for farm pro ducts 11 review of national labour leg lslation 12 low cost housing program 13 improved freight rate struc ture 14 review of civil service legi slation 15 national policy to exploit na tural resources 16 full support for the common wealth u n nato and other world bodies in the articles to follow i shall deal with those points of the plat form that pertain and have direct relation to the people of the county of halton suth is reduction of lax ation contributory health insurance a low cost housing program for men and women in the medium and lower salary brackets improved prices for farm products by the res toration and expansion of world markets to increase the diminishing returns to the farmers of this coun ty and the country as a whole and the other points especially applic able to us before enunciating and introduc ing this program to the people of this eountry every point was fully considered studiiy and weighed in the light of our present national and international commitments for ipcrformance in thematter of tax reduction alone there can be a sav lng of half a billion dollars yearly and still take care of our present defence social security programs and those increases which v ill be tailed for by the proposals we have made for the improvement of the aiilertnt government services by ap lying sound business methods by ending waste and extravagance los jes and ineitieienty which have been repc rled by every independent en quiry of which parliament has been permitted to see the report there can be no reduction of taxes however by the return of a government to office which spends 1510 for fveiy day of the year including sunday for telephones and telegrams in the defence deput ment alone yvhitrh spends 10000 000 a yc r on publicity and 28 000 000 for piofcssional sense of responsibilitv to the canadian people to such i degree that it has neither the will the energy nor the comjetence to remedy or correct the same meanwhile may i say to you the people of the county of halton ih it i am proud to be the progres sivc conservative candidate for this county and that pride is tempered only by the scne of responsibility it carries to every man woman and child r am proud to be the candidate for my party because the progres sive conservative party has stood side by side with the liberal party through the centuries in what has becj commonly known as our two party parliamentary system in lay inc the foundition and maintaining the freedom of democratic govern ment in this nation during the past three years as president of the women s progres sive conservative association oi- canada 1 have travelled from coast to coast and into many remote areas of this country and nowhere have i found anything finer than halton county lying as it does in the heart of the industrial development of the north american continent and supported by richly productive ag ricultural lands over all this is the genius and resourcefulness of the men and women of halton coun ty which has in time past and will in years to come give it a place of leadership in this nation 1 know the county of halton and the progressive history of its peo ple for i come from a family that has lived in this county for over one hundred and fifty years for the past sixteen i hie practiced law in georgetown and during tint time i have been concerned with the prob lems of the farmers industrial wor kers merchants professional people and all other classes of citizens of halton county and my business social and other interests are cen trcd here i have a deep and abid ing
