federation mr riv ers and his family were on their way to ryerson beach camp where he will lead the young people at camp in a course ortemperance education he assisted rev j m smith in devotions and after being introduced by mr smith chose for the basis of his address the writing of paul to the oioatians in chapter 5 from verses 11 using verse 16 as his text walk in the spirit and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh mr rivers did not draw a black picture of the harm- intem perance is doin he thought th newspapers and observations coulfl tell that sufhciently but he rather built up hi5 cause for temperance and the work of the ontario tem perance federal ion from the posi tive side stressing that it had re solved itself largely into a ques tion to be answered individual and personally temperance or in temperance haiinbecome almost a way of life calling for a decision on our part as to which way we will follow from that our influence spreads through our homes and community and though the federation could not reach the individual directly on any large stale it was doing much through its educational meth ods which were considered one of the chief means of meeting the problem as it is at present and they are giving ood leadeiship and assistance to communities trying to cope with the problem of excessive intemperance mr rivers staled that they had nad much encourage ment more than they had anticipa ted in helping communities where there evidently was a great desire to keep this matter within control he thought the work of temperance education among young people such as through high school training and young peoples groups at camps and of many kinds in our commun ities was having considerable sue cess especially where it was backed up by home influence and that es pecially where no temptation of any kind was placed in front of these young people counteracting the good which they had received into their minds mr rivers caled for positive ac tion which woim fill the lives of our young people and many not so young with good activities leaving little or no rocr or desire for the things which hurt their lives or in paul s words of the text brack- els a matter of great importance to the county of halton in its pres cnl expansion and development and still another and not of the least importance by any means the res toration of the supremacy of par liimcnt wherebj the member sent from his or her constituency to the house of commons will have free diid full opportunity to engage in debate and carry on the admimstra tivc affairs of this country and at the same time speaking for his or her own constituency at all times the management and administra tion of the affairs of this country by its representatives in the house of commons has in the last eighteen years been almost completely re placed by management and admini stration through committees secret orders in coujicil and emergency power acts whereby government has been placed in the hands of a very few men possessing arbitrary and dictatorial power these as enumerated are only a few of the issues before the elec torate in this eection which is one of the most if not the most import ant since confederation but the liberal party will seek to divert public attention from these basic and fundamental matters by bring ing up imaginary and other thread- bear issues tha have been brought out m every election campaign in this county for the last fifteen years the harsh crat ing sounds which voters in this county will hear for the next few weeks will ring and rmrtagement and we do not wish to mimmizc the work and contribution made by the liberal party and other pirties in this tnuntry but it must be remembered that the prosperity of this nation is due primarily to the fact that we have been endow ed with magnifi ent natural resour ces to which have been applied the genius and skill of our people to produce food and supplies during a wartime economy for the purpose of waging the second world war and rehabilitating many of the nations of the world after that war the united states has provided the dollars to the people of europe by which they bought our products and through that means we found ready and valuable markets for the sale of our goods now that these dollars are not forthcoming we are facing the tragic position whereby the markets of the united kingdom are all but closed to us and those of the united states are on a dimin ishing scale the farmers of this county know full well the results of this management in the shrink age of their incomes you will be told the conserva tives will raise the tariffs and the excise duties but let me point out to you that the tariff and excise duties arc now it the highest ipeak that they have ever been in this country with all this prosperity we are paying almost a much taxation in this country as we did in the peak year of the war in 1945 the ivcr- age canadian father with wife and three children p tys 1 550 00 per year in taxes one dollar in every four goes to the dominion govern ment in taxation and one working day in five working days is given by the workman to the government to pay for the administration of this country we are staggc ing under the hea viest taxation ever exacted from the canadian people these taxes are collected in various ways and forms one of which is in hidden taxes these hidden taxes apply alike to high and low income groups and especially penalize the low in come group lt the year 1952 ev ery person in this country paid a hidden tax of approximately si 05 whereas in the vcar 1939 each in dividual paid something less than 22 00 these hidden taxes have gre itly tnereisd the cost of living this year from farm and factory office and home the men and wo men of canada w ill speak with one voice the gigantic over powering burden of taxation must be lighten cd countless hiiden taxes must be cut and income tax must be put on a saner fairer basis george drew has said he will cut taxes by half a billion dollar mr abbott and mr howe say this is impossible and ridiculous what is the use of tel ling people that when only a few days ago statistics showed that in the first two months of this fiscal year the liberal government col lected from the people in taxes over two hundred million dollars more than is required to finance this country and balance the bud get it would now eem to be a crime to suggest that lhe people be relic ved of taxation but they will be we will aehicv c this through a housecleaning program thta will sweep through every government department particularly our reck less free spending in defence dep artments think what a good clean up without impiinng the elticicncv of our irmed forces will do in
