has 1 been awarded to the local contract ing firm of j b mackenzie son at a special meeting of the north halton school board monday in stewarttown contracts which had been opened at a meeting last week were reviewed and the mackenzie tender of 117000 accepted subject to some minor downward revisions for slight changes in plans which will decrease the cost of the build ing the mackenzie tender was one of four received other tenderers were lavern asmussen kitchener 119727 w a brown humber summit 123780 mcnally con struction georgetown 126625 delay in accepting a tender was caused by the cost of the george town school being in excess of the original 120000 budget figure it is estimated that with equipment and land the georgetown project the weather mr editor- that sudden drop in the temper firm is estimated to cost complete 185000 nonagenarian falls injuries are fatal dept nixes new school proceed with addition a marked difference in cost per square foot and per teaching area in the planned new high school at acton and an addition at george town led north halton school board to seek an interview with the dept of education last week to see if consideration could not be given to building a complete new school in georgetown on thursday a delegation talked with mr easton of the depts tech nical department and were told that at present it is out of the question for any accommodation to be scrap- ped regardless of longterm econ omy and that the only thing geor getown could do would be to ac cept the lowest tender on the job or revise plans to fit an addition to the 120000 budget figure after accepting a 154000 tender for the 7room acton school which it is estimated will cost 185000 complete the school board at last weeks meeting debated the wisdom of building 4 rooms here at a final cost of 145000 the board reason ed that as it is the plan to even tually replace the old georgetown building with a new wing this could be done at the present time for an extra expenditure of fifty to sixty thousand dollars whereas five rooms added at a future date would cost at least double this amount members of the delegation wal ter biehn of georgetown george brown esquesing ross carbert nassagaweya and secretary gor don brown were told that the dis trict had received approval of a 350000 expenditure which will al so include one extra room at mil ton only a few weeks before maxi mum government grants were re duced by 10000 a classroom and grants eliminated altogether on special rooms such as domestic science ahd shop- extra cost in georgetown which amounts to almost 200 a square foot end 10000 per teaching unit is accounted for mainly in plumb ing and heating costs the new addition here will contain a heat ing plant for the entire building end all plumbing for the whole school in georgetown four rooms will also carry the extra cost of equip- ping a home economics room pro- viding locker room and teachers rooms and a 6000 land purchase whereas in acton these extra costs are spread over 7 standard rooms the government pays no grants on these extras and the bigger the school the more they spread out to made the cost per room in line with the depts approved expenditures accepting the lowest tender for the georgetown school at a meeting monday tne school board reasoned jhat the five municipalities involv ed had given approval tor a total expenditure of 350000 actons school will cost 25000 less than budgeted for and georgetowns 25000 more with miltons esti mated to cost no more than the 20000 budget figure the milton contract is still to be awarded the school board feels that the work will be completed well within the total budget unfortunately because of the structure of the dept of education grants north halton district will have more of the bill to pay than was originally planned a at present the district receives a 79 grant on expenditures up to a maximum of 30000 per elas- if the three buildings were wellknown in georgetown
