candi dates have done the reason can be explained in three words lack of finances the ccf does not have the large sums ox money available that art made available to the two old par ties to carry on their campaigns our funds com from our members and sympathizers usually it am ounts ranging foin out dollar to ten dollars blair fraser writing in the april 15th edition of maclean s says candidates for the two old parties will each spend between eight and twelve thousand dollars on their election campaigns compare this w ith my budge w hich is sev en hundred dollars deduct two hun dred dollars for my deposit and a two hundred dollar contribution to the pro incial campaign fund and you will realize why i have not cirned on an expensive newspaper and pttr lamuiyi while lack of fundi makes cimpaibmnt difficult 1 believe the difficulty is more than offset b the willingness of our wor kers to go out and actively cam paimi for mt jto date we havi jde personal contacts w ith over ten thousand electors in halton because we do not get slush funds from the big businesses that con tribute to the od parties ccf can dtdatcs when elected are free to represent you the electors this is not true of the old parties as can be seen by their voting records did mr cleaver protest against the in equalities in thp increased tax ex cmptions which mr abbott said were made possible by the increa sed production of the workers and which gives 70 per cent of the tax cuts to the feu wealthy corpora tions and individuals and only 10 per cent to the many who made the cut possible the answer can be found in hansard the liberals voted solidly in favour of the bud get where do the two old parties stand on such issues as a national health plan a national housing plan increased pensions for the aged blind and disabled federal aid for education and national marketing boards national health plan ccf members of parliament have time after time presented bills for a national health plan that would give to every camtdian complete medical and health care only to have the liberals and conservatives vote solidly against them now on the eve of the election they tell us they are all in favour of a fiat ional health plan the ccf is the only party the insurance companies do not have strings on therefore we arc the only party who cm give you i health plan that is operated solely for your benefit and protection housing for those who wish to build their own hom tin cc f proposes to have loans in ide directly through centnl morlgi and housing cor ioration at 2 per ctnl interest that rite of 90 per cent of the lending val ie the imortiza tion period would be increased to thirty years the adoption of these three ccf proposals would mean that payments on a well built 10 000 house would be only 33 20 per month social security one of the pings that the ccf has fought hardest for is a better social security system i wonder how many of o have any eoncep tion of what it is like to live on 40 per month yet that is what thousands of old ace and blind pensioners have to do with the cost of living as it is today pensions should be at least 60 per month at the present time there is no fmrovlsdon tor those who are incapacitated in some way other than by blindness another gap ts the lackof any provision for sickness insurance when the bseadwlnner takes 111 the family income stops hist at a time iwhen help is needed most other countries not as wealthy as canada have provided sickness insurance to meet such emergencies the ccf believes that society should provide jfor the aged the sick the disabled and all those who through no fault of their own are unable to provide for themselves it was through the efforts of our founder the late j 9 woodsworth that old age pensions were estab lished in 1926 ccf farm plan in the last few months the cost of living has come down slightly i wonder how many of us realize that most of that drop has been at the expense of the farmers while most prices have continued to rise farm prices have dropped drastically our farmers have been caught in a price cost squeeze how did this happen the chief reason is to be found in the failure of the liberal governments to pro tect the farmers overseas markets in the last few years after the wa the liberal gov ernment set out deliberately to switch a greater percentage of our trade from the united kingdom to the united states great britain and other countries in the sterling are had been our best customers for agriculture products little ef fort was mad however by the canadian government to retain these markets when post war difficulties arose for example the parliamen tary assistant o the minister of agriculture had this to say in lou don ont on december jyth 1949 we are americans he said and whether we like it or not we art toing to stay i lose to the stales ufid we are lomr to buy the maj only of our feoods from the states we re a dollir country and we ii stay that w ij even if it mcins payin a little more for our goods well still buy from the states well th it kind of attitude by the government his cost can idl in for mtrs dcarlv our natur and val uable markets in the united kiiil doin for bacoi ipples cheese and other dairy products has been lost anri tho wwtng tie u fa market has been disastrous we should have learned by now that u b itself is a big producer of the products we wish to sell and is an uncertain and unreliable market the ccf bclcves that we must take v igorous s eps to regain our overseas markets last year canada spent twenty times as much in the us as in britain that trend must be reversed it most of our govern tnent purchases were made in the united kingdom they would have tens of million of dollars more to spend on canadian agricultural products along with our policies for re gaining our overseas markets is our proposal to protect the farmers from violent fluctuations in prices the ccf has urged the establish mint of a system of guaranteed for ward prices basd on parity mini mum prices will be established well ahead of planting or breeding seasons to enable farmers to plan their production without worrying about market fluctuations such forward pricing techniques are not mere theory they have worked successfully in other coun tries the ccf believes they can be used in canada to give greater sec urity to our farmers and to stlmu late a great increase in our food production this is greatly need ed in a world where twothirds of the population go to bed hungry every night while it has been impossible for me to meet every elector in hal ton personally i have been grcilly ntouragcd by the people 1 hive had the pleasure of meeting if you believe trmtf we should put humanity jirst then on aturusl 10th vote cc 1 guests of municipality use assessors home as ranch style sample georgetown was host last wed nesday to members of halton as sessors association when that group held its monthly meeting here assessors from the ten municipal ities in the county were entertained at dinner by the municipality at the mcgibbon house and also spent the day in profitable discussions of assessing questions foremost on file agenda was the assessing of ranch style homes so prevalent today and on which not too much specif ib help is given tn the manual which the govern ment has prepared for guidance as sessment commissioner joseph gib bons who has just built a new ranchstyle home of his own on church street ued tnis house as a sample and each assessor was given an appraisal card to assess the house results were gratifying when all assessors arrived at a figure which varied by only a few jhuo- dreddollars the monthly meetings have been profitable to the assessors them selves as well as to the municipal ities and the county as a whole which gets its revenue from an equalization which in the past has been subject to dispute from time to time when problems are iron ed out between the men whose judg ment is umd to fix local tax pay merits there is a better chance of unanimity between municipalities when equalization time arrives ech year fall fair dates acton sept 18 19 arthur sept 29 30 ancaster
