murray mcphail halton county liberal association murray mephatl you will be marking your ballot next monday and through this sim ple democratic process you will re cord your personal opinion of the governments efforts to make this county and canada a pleasant pros perous and secure place in which to live and to raise our families that is actually what the election means but too often i believe such a decision becomes clouded and confused by too many politicians making deliberate dedicated at tempts to bewilder the ordinary person no statement is too wild no accusation top strong to dis credit honest efforts of the party doing the job election promises mount up and can be counted by every platform appearance or place visited during the campaign each promise of course is designed to please the particular audience of the moment in addition to bridges for quebec and a dam for western canada mr drew has c boon p at the present time the people in halton county benefit each year by 2000000 in old age pensions and family allowances no one knows how much of that amount would go to help mr drew cut the national budget the liberal administration has pioneered in providing social secur ity and it is now blazing a trail to ward national health insurance health insurance has been high in the liberal administrations prog- rains to be undertaken but prema ture adoption of any scheme with out careful study and extensive sur veys would have doomed it and probably buried it for years to come when health insurance is introdu ced by the liberal administration and that day is not too distant you will know that it is the best possible program designed to meet the needs and desires of the major ity of the canadian people t ever since tn end of the war your government has followed a payasyougo policy and our en- yre cost of rearmament has been paid out of current taxes in add- tlon to this we have paid 2225- 000000 off the national debt this year the liberal administration re duced taxation by 360000000 you havent heard much said about that the dollar in your pocket is the best dollar in the world we have no unemployment and millions of dollars of foreign capital are being invested in canada every year wo are more prosperous and are enjoy ing a higher standard of living than ever before and while mr drew is pre-occu- pied with arranging conservative excursions to great britain we find that the financial pages of even the tory press are reporting in creased canadian trade on world wide scale the telegram july 30th on its financial page stated a sharp 93 per cent increase in the value of domestic exports in june as com pared with the same month in 1952 is reported by tho bureau of statis tics the article continues n thk akorgktown hmaij wednesday evening aug 5 1959 page 1 ing that he will cut a half billion dollars off the budget lately how ever he has been complaining about a whispering campaign against him that intends to cut old age pensions and family allowances why the whisper sureley there should be no misunderstanding about his intent he may not intend to reduce the amount of family al lowance and old age pensions but he certainly intends to reduce the number of people receiving them the tory policy on old age pen sions and family allowances is con tained in five fatal words for those who need it those words were used by mr jjrew speaking at london there can be no misinter pretation they mean only one thing the tories if elected will prompt ly introduce a means test for old age pensions and family allowan ces id like to say this to all canadians under liberal government canadians have added every year to the national strength and national unity of canada we have had the greatest expansion of social welfare in our history we have increased our employment our production and our national income every year we have had the gr expansion of our primary and secondary industries truly an industrial revolution because of the outstanding contribution of the members of our nayy armband a force we have been able to do our full share to prevent and to stop commnnhs aggression we have reduced the national debt every year and in the last two yean reaped the reward in lower tax rates do we want all that to be continued do you really think its time for a change for a change to a parliament of regional groups- a handful of social crediters from the far west a few socialists from the prairies a few more conservatives from ontario or the maritime and some socalled independents from quebec in such a parliament without the leadership and responsibility of a united national party how could the government help being weak and insecure do we want a weak and divided government to deal with the formidable problems of the next few years i ask you is it really time for a change we believe most canadians want a government which encourages enterprise promotes trade and fosters the exploration and develop ment of our resources arid you know it as well as we do that requires balanced budgets paying off debts in prosperous times and a tax structure which while fair to all is adequate to meet these demands for a
