newspapers association and the ontarioquebec division of the cwna election tactics change if anyone in halton can say he hasnf talked to at least one of the three aspirants for office in next monday s election fd be very much surprised all three candidates have been cam paigning on the grass roots principle of vis iting from home to home no easy job when you figure out how many homes and how much travelling this entails whether this new type of campaigning is prevalent in all ridings or whether it is unique in halton we don t know but certainly the ccf s stan allen progressive conservative sybil bennett and liberal murray mcphall have been burning up the miles and the mid night oil in their personal approach to the el ectors perhaps it is a situation forced on nomin ees by the apparent lack of interest in political meetings nowadays you have to offer free eats a floor show and a lucky draw to be sure of even a token crowd at any ordinary meet ing and even the visit of high placed dignitar the shakespeare festival the stratford shakespenan festival has won world wide acclaim and has oeen so suc cessful that it will extend an extra week in august until august 22nd we have talked to several who have seen one or both the productions of richard iii and all s well that ends well and have yet to hear anyone say they did not enjoy them the critics have praised both productions and par ticularly the performances of the two visiting stars alec guinness and irene worth and it looks as if the festival will become a yearly event whether stars of the magnitude of guin a holiday period with so many industrial firms closed for holidays or working with half staff this week and next many merchants have planned their vacations at a similar time on main street this week such stores as silver s simmons jewellery mcgowan s specialty shop and merv cook s barber shop pot pourri local contractors j b mackenzie 6c son will be a busy firm for the next year they were successful tenderers on thjcee large school jobs in georgetown acton and norval all sla ted for completion before september next year sale of kenneth m langdon s law practice to hewson glancy reduces the local law practitioners from four to three george hewson had started a practice here last month but will now be taking over mr langdon s practice the latter is retiring to devote full time to duties as magistrate m three counties when mrs george dixon left two years ago for ceylon where her husband was an en gmeer sent to that country under the colombo plan she promised some newsy letters about life in that country the nixons are back in canada and her father roger guyot who paid a call at the office last week tells us that mrs nixon found the climate too oppressive to do anything extra in the way of work which wasn t absolutely necessary anyone who was bothered by the humidity here this summer will realize how bad this could be if it lasted for months on end so we can well understand why we never got the letter we looked for mr les is not always an assurance that a hall will be filled to overflowing and the value of m- lvidual poatical meetings is relatively nil for it is very seldom that any but the faithful sup porters turn up in fact the value might be in reverse when this is the case for tf every listener present is a supporter of the party the only change that can be made is for the candi date to make a poor impression and turn a vote the other way personally we would like to see a return to the old fashioned way of having all candi dates stump the county on the same platform today there are so many voters who do not take their politics seriously and who do not understand what a party supports that this would be one way for a candidate to pick up votes by a direct platform approach perhaps the footsore experience of the three present office seekers will encourage a joint effort when election day comes round again four years from now ness and worth can be persuaded to spend a summer in a small ontario city will be the question in the future for there is no doubt that they are the big drawing cards we can imagine that next year stratford will be trying for sir laurence olivier who with his wife vivien leigh might even surpass the present stars m public interest one can only have profound respect for the small group of men whose dream came true on opening night in july when stratford be came an internationally known community hnd the cause of drama in canada was mater lally furthered are closed down as is the kertrer coal office it is a tendency which is becoming more common each year for merchants to follow the lead of the factories and we may see almost a com plete cessation of business activity in town dur ing one week each summer a c collins tells us that he has sold his prop erty on ann street to harold campbell and plans to live next year in milton where he tea ches in the milton heights public school mr collins wife died recently after a long illness in hospital sorry to learn that the bruce mackenzies are leaving town soon and will be living in hamilton mr mackenzie has served in many public capacities among them a term on council and on the high school board and his wife has been active in the iode and other la dies organizations mr and mrs dave box ford she is the former gwenn conn who have been living at aldershot since their mar riage have moved to town and are living at an apartment at the home of mr and mrs wake ford which was formerly tenanted by the late mrs w v grant we have found the americans very nice both in business and socially says mrs leslie ellis writing from salem ohio to tell us of a change in street address mr ellis left town earlier this year for a new position with a ceramics firm there they are now living at 489 south lincoln ave in salem research netessarjlfor textile trade survival if the canadian textile industry is to meet foreign competition and survive it must do more research that warning comes from an auth ority fiat warrants attention dr h b speakman head of the ontario research foundation it was aimed particularly at that part of the in dustry which is mainly made up of small companies operating and villages the textile industries says dr speak man are long established in ontario and contribute largely to the econorriic and social wellbeing of many of our towns and villages theyare operating in one of the most compel tie markets in the world faced with rivalry of our neighbour to the south with an en ormous output relative to our own and also the products of countries with lower wage scales and there- dtore lower costs of manufacture our own wage structure cannot bo fixed without regard to the prevail ing standards in various industries and among other consequences we find a relatively high labor turn over particularly in the larger cen tres of population individually- as dr speafonan points out these interests have not the financial resources to undertake their own research they must co operate as to do before the great depression wrecked this and other plans financial peat trat rincs narrate wat coast history the fascinating history of the west coast region is locked up in the layer upon layer of growth rings in the ancient giants of the tree world tree rings tell of drouth fires wet periods and other hap penings woodsmen recently dis covered close by the shores of the hoquiam river where it enters grays harbor the prow of a mighty 40 man indian war canoe partially shaped in the trunk of a huge west ern red cedar tree still standing and st 1 growing work had started more than 500 years ago then mvsterifusly it stopped the brave doing the job with fire and primi t ve tools was probably called rom his labors to participate in tribal war imes and never went back to his forest work bench maybe he was a casualty of the wars un questionably the first woodworker on the pacific coast was a quinault indian brave great great great grandfather of the inhian whose hand was strangely stilled because western red cedar is one of the most durable of all woods almost impervious to wear deterioration decay and disease much of the handicraft of these ancients who roomed our western water edges is still found in remnants of their work war canoes totem poles and other products of the cedar log and quinault and chehahs indian crafts manship still exist the tree rings are like the human finger prints rings can be matched eeach ring tells its own story whether the year 1887 was extra wet whether a fire scorched the bark of the tree in 1779 even the story of a severe wind storm in the year 1303 is told by brt ken limbs and tops tomorrows eggs wfll be improved what can we expect from to morrow s egg if past
