government was re turned to power in monday s feder al election what council did industrial needs increase seek second water source expected use of 200 000 gallons of water daily in the new smith stone plastic plant is causing the town council to consider adding to the present water supply in town the subject was discussed at a council meeting last week and later in the week the water com mittee headed by reeve kenneth macdonald met with mr roberts of the dineen philips roberts firm of brantford which engineer ed the present deep well system in 1948 the tow n water comes from a large well on lower main street which has a capacity of a million gallons a day and is pumped into the water system with pumps op erating several hours a day it re places the former gravity system whereby georgetown got alt its wa ter from a spring reservoir at sil- vercreek whicn gradually dried up as land w cleared in swampy areas which fed the springs up until the present georgetown has been using about 400 000 gal lons of water daily and increased consumption bj smith stone will raise this by a third and bring the peak load close to the present ca pacity of the well even with steady pumping before any definite action is tak en on a second source of supply council intends to ask smith stone for a definite answer as to whether the firm intends to con tinue as at present or whether there is a possibility of installing a cool ing sjstem to reclaim water which which will cost the firm eight or ten thousand dollars a year in water taxes discussing the matter at council cr frank petcn said he would like to have the advice of a second en gineering firm before any action is taken reminded by mayor arm strong that if two firms are con stilted there w ould be an extra charge to pay for investigation cr mcgilvray sided with m pctch in saying this would betta small fee to pay for another opinion cr allen suggested that council should hear mr roberts report first before deciding on any fu ture course of action mr petch said he understood that mr ro- ashgrove what a dreadful wet sunday we had and so mucn grain out in the fields oh well we have the pro mise of seed time and harvest so we must have faith that we will be given the weather to finish the job mr and mrs j h hunter and daughters arc enjoying a holiday motoring up north to klrkland lake north bay and other places miss ann barnes is having a de lightful two weeks with friends up in haliburton mr and mrs joseph drake and family spent a week up at wasaga beach we are so glad to see mrs fred wrigglesworth able to be out again on sunday morning she has been laid up with a bad back but it is improving and we all hope it will continue berts would be saying in his report that a second source of water could be tapped a few hundred yards away from the present well if this was so mr petch continued he did not think it was possible without weakening either the old well or the new one cr norton said he had already discussed this with mr roberts and that it is quite possible to have se veral million gallons close together capable of being developed in two wells any engineer can make a mis take but in order to do a job we have to choose one said mayor armstrong as the discussion con cluded mr roberts firm was here before and gave us one of the great est deep wells in this section of the country we will hear their re port and if council then feels that another report is necessary we will get it then the mayor said that he went through a terrible time when ho was acting mayor in 1948 during a bitter water controversy one mem ber of council wanted witching so a woman had been engaged to find water in this way she iad found it in the park near the arm ouries but tests showed a capacity of only 150 000 gallons daily you ii find several places in town where there 16 water said the mayor but to date no source has been discovered with a sufficient daily capacity to justify develop inj a well what council did in a liberal sv eep almost as powerful as in 1949 prime minis ter st laurent s government was icturned to powei in mondays fed eral election the liberals will have 171 seats when canada town council discussed several times during past years is a continuation of ewing street to ontario to pro vide a through road from no 7 highway to the college view sec tion of town rapid expansion of the smith stone plant which has just opened a new addition which will employ an extra 75 persons has created a affic bottleneck at the john street subway and this dangerous situation will be consid erably relieved if the new road is constructed at a recent council meeting town clerk john d kplly was instructed to have a by law prepared which would call for a 27 000 debenture issue for the new paved roadway estimated costs of this amount were submitted by county engineer roy smith who had been asked to make a preliminary survey and recom mendations it is planned to put in a 56 foot long culvert west of the present creek which will be diverted into a new creek channel 330 feet long mr smith estimates that 6000 yards o fill would be needed for the new road which would be 40 feet wide a secondary benefit of the road extension should be an easement of flooding whicn takes place every spring because of the twisting na ture of the creek once the creek bed is straightened there should be considerably less danger of major flooding in the spring the new road would be subject to a 50sc grant from the depart ment of highways georgetown high school upper school results beckett maby english
