ten pages georgetown ont wednesday augusl 26th j953 ten pages what council did council asks highway diversion via maple ave what council did kyopening up the maple avenue iaghtofway to link the east and rest portions of that street could done at very small expense to georgetown if county and province r cooperate in the opinion of mayor i armstrongs a strong delegation from council will interview the dept of high- lways about this matter which ties dtnip possible plans for extending igeorgetowns water system now be discussed by council the maple extension came up af- i ter council had heard engineer ftob- i trs report recommending a second l water source and a reservoir when lithe mayor said it would be en op- importune time for establishing a i roadway which sooner or later must jrbe done while the town is running water llfnd sewer lines along the right-of- kwby it would fee economical to pro- toeed with the road itself he be- kueves technically maple avenue ja the county link with no 7 and would be a good chance of l county paying so per cent of lthe cost he said and if the high- cway department could be persuaded tto make this a subhighway to kxoute traffic through without pass- 1 dug down the narrow hilly stretch hat present in use another 25 per lucent might be available there the deputation will have a good ijrtory o tell the department in the mayors opinion it is fool- i ish for the government to continue i its present plan of buying up land i bordering no 7 from town limits to i normandy boulevard and do an ex- i pensive widening job only to have this end in a bottleneck down thru flats ffd up the church hill lihls he feels would accomplish nothing and cost a lot of money the department would be much i farther ahead to share the cost of t finishing maple avenue two traf- rflc avenues would then be avail- i able a growing nuisance of nar- 1 row turns for buses at guelph and i water streets and at mill and main i would be eliminated at the same i time as buses could proceed lalong k maple then straight along main ito the depot social personal mr and mrs ivan hay elizabeth and mary spent two weeks vacation recently at sauble beach mr and mrs stan allen at the last meeting of georgetown council mr allen said that georgetown has been getting the runaround from the county and if they dont intend to keep the connecting links in a good state looked after cr allen retorted- yes and i doubt if his promises stay in his mind until he leaves town mr allen who lives on river drive also a county link said he was fed up with eating dust on that street this year too the county engineer is in quite a spot mayor armstrong said be cause this year the county road grant was cut by 80000 by the govern ment and there just isn t the money to do all
