broomhead the herald is printed each wednesday in the office on main street georgetown authorized as second class mall post office dept ottawa member of the vwdwi weekly newspapers association and the ontarioquebec division of the cwjja goodbye girls and thanks on the eve of a major telephone change we would be remiss if we did not mention one feature whicfit will be missing when the mayor makes the first call by dial early sunday mor ning through the years a faithful group of ladies have earned their livelihood as telephone girls and their cheery number please will now be only a memory admittedly our local system has never been perfect for this we can blame the pow ers that be in the bell cnipany for keeping antiquated equipment long after it should have been replaced and though the phone girls have taken their share of abuse from irate customers it has rarely been human er ror that caused delays and interruptions in ser vice we will miss the ladies on the switch board possibly more than any other bustness- a call for action it isn t often that providence gives a warning so merciful as the accident on norval hill saturday morning we can be thankful that injuries were not more serious among the young lads in the bus which plunged into a ravine after the driver had lost control on the rutty highway resurfacing of no 7 has waited far too long already and it is to be hoped that prompt action will now be taken by the highways department before any further accidents oc cur the norval hill is not the only place where extensive repair work is needed though it is probably the worst here the hapless traveller bounces from one bump to another cycle club could help one of the hardest things to control dur ing a major fire threat is automobile traffic iricre is something dbout a fire which dravss humans like mollis to the flame we could write eer wetk t lljng people to slav at home when thc hear the siren but it would hae little efffct nx e too would probabl be in the parade when the next fire came hie onl practical way to avoid serious traffic jams such as occurred at two recent barn fires is to have volunteers organized to spring to action at the time perhaps we have the answer right on our doorstep in the district pot pourri last week was a tiring one for all the herald staff with a 1 2 page paper to be pro duced in two days instead of the customary three we made the grade and had it out early thursday morning but a few extra er rors escaped a bleary eyed proofreader for instance we printed an engagement notice without mentioning the groom s parents left arthur ruddell s name off a card of thanks for aid at the time of his barn fire and left a few names out of a write up at the last min ute about a softball dinner at stewarttown a lucky combination of dates kept the fair board out of the red this year ordinarily saturday would have been fair day but the late labor day holiday swung the cne a week later and the georgetown date was advanced to october because of this that downpour of rain in the early afternoon would have meant curtains for the crowd so everything worked out for the best sale of the golf man for they have been most courteouqsajid obliging often in the course of business we have been on the phone for two or three hours at a time and their help in ringing in when a country line is free calling us back if the party we wetephonmg got to the phone after we hung up and many other little favours beyond the call of duty has been appreciated particularly during the past month the phone girls have been working under handi caps oi which the general public was not aware technicians and repairmen have been coming and going cutting in on lines remov ing equipment and generally making a three ring circus of the phone office through it all business has been carried on as usual with a minimum of inconvenience to miss chave and her staff we say thanks we will miss and just as he recovers control hits a third ask any local driver what he thinks of the anglican church hill or for that matter the hill going up towards the monument silver creek hill is on a par with these and here too there are deep ravines waiting to claim acci dent victims we hope a strong joint protest will be made by town and township council asking for immediate action from the dept of high ways in the meantime the least that can be done is for signs to be erected warning drivers tho the highway is dangerous and to drive along it at reduced speed and with extra caut ion use play time wisely sunday sermon on sunday at st john s united church rev jonr m smith spoke on a mans life and his play us ing aa a text puul s advice to the christians t rcmt abhor that which is evil g ood advice for christians anywhere and even non- christians last week mr smith spoke on man s lif and his work a labor day sunday sern on showing that man must worn to live rightly on sunday he showed that though man shall live by bread the fruit of his labouis he should not live by bread alone mans life is hot complete witti work alone god has made him of a complex nature that calls for a continual renewal or recreation of body mind and spirit and so his play life of hobby games or any right use of leisure becomes ano ther vital part of his existence al ong with his labour without this renewal from change of scene and activity the grind and rduttne would say mans vitality and wear his life out long before ts allotted span man s life is in danger unless he keeps sis work and play in proper balance down through the ages we have had many accounts of man s use of his play life with various results good when balanced and con structive harmful when too much sometimes too little but especially when destructive rafter than re newing man s voiattnas more and more become part of the machine age and he is picked up jn its whirl and becomes more as a cog even though important and very neces sary yet taking away much of his personal touch ar d in such a case it is very often hi his play life that he can give expression of himself which helps so much to make a man feel worthwhile and needed and so refitted for his daily task which suggests that man s play should be constructive making him feel re newed in body mind and spirit and here st paul s advice helps abhor that which is evil make your play so that it will not hurt pourself your family your com munity your church nor god s work anywhere call your play by its real meaning re creation not as we pronounce it rekcreation only so can man live the abundant life god wishes him to live and which he himself should want to live mans playlif should be compat ible with god s wih and will chris tians are apt to separate work and play from gods way of life and thtir christum profession whereas th idmomtion of jtsus seek e f ii st tht kingdo ii of god means id oui umk ii i in our pliv is in nil tlst or miss tht abund mt life for ills reason pauls advice ap plus uk
