newspapers association and the ontario division of the cwjlnla we what should we bilieve with so much in the daily press and n views magazines about suspected communists in high american government posts and the reams of material which jraise and blame mc- carthyism it is no wonder that most of us end up not knowing what or how much to believe the harry dexter white case bringing expresident truman into the limelight so far that he found it necessary to make a nation wide radio and television broadcast complica ted our thinking still further and now can adas mystery man igor gouzenko external affairs minister pearson and the late macken zie king are names being dragged into the witch hunt as those who oppose mccarthy are wont to call it we should like to think that a lead edi torial in saturdays globe mail puts the matter in the proper perspective for cana dians and as it seems to be the most sensible interpretation so far advanced we shall take it at face value for the present a suggestim for miss bennett the globe writer believes that canadas refusal to allow an american senate comnut- teegkun- american activities to come to canqp question gouzenko the star of canadas 1946 spy trial is for two reasons he thinks canada does not want to become embroiled in the 1954 american elections which apparently are to be fought on a com munist issue by mccarthy he further thinks that gouzenko has had no opportunity to learn anything new about international con spiracies since 1 946 when he wgpt mto hiding under protective custody of themounted pol ice in all this matter the globe writer concludes gouzenkos own wishes have to be considered there is no question of sur rendering him as he is not a captive he is a british subject with freedom of movement and if he wants to go to washington and talk with mccarthy there is nothing to stop him it might be asking too much of a fledg ling in parliament but we can hope that miss sybil bennett could enlighten her halton con stituents on the matter being at the scene of action she is in a position to be an informed source of opinion more than any other hal- tomtes and her remarks cou perhaps dispel some of the confusion in our minds it has been our hope that miss bennett after the initial period of learning procedure and getting acquainted with her important of fice as a member of parliament might con- tribute a regular column of opinion to the six 9 county newspapers the late gordon gray- don made this a practice during his years in parliament and at one time haltons hughes cleaver did so too it is perhaps something hockey costs money i in case there are others who think as one man we talked to that hockey is locally financed by gate receipts a word of explan ation might be in order hockey has become an expensive game and if hockey of intermediate oha calibre is to be continued in georgetown it needs an angel either a business firm or a weal thy man who will underwrite the expense or a combination of angels composed of people who are willing to kick in a few extra dollars for the good of the game recently the hockey club sent out a fin ancial appeal for funds this is not something new this year we can recall lucky draws in the past sale of season tickets for certain re served seats and appeals mainly to industrial firms and businessmen usually at the end of that we almost should expect because it is one of the few contacts that a member of parlia ment has after her election with the rank and file of voters such a column would of course not be expected to be merely a medium of propa ganda for the party which miss bennett rep resents though being human it wouldjae nat ural to expect that it would at times be tinged with her political way of thinking we would suggest that if not weekly at least twice a month she write of matters which particularly concern the county and her own efforts in parliament as well as touching on matters of great national interest such as the gouzenko business the season to make up the deficit for no matter how good the season at the box office there always seems to be a deficit where does the money go many pla ces there is expensive equipment to buy hockey sticks are a big item in themselves oha referees must be paid there is transpor tation expense possible medical bills to be paid some remuneration to players adver tising gate attendants as well as a share to the board of parks which has payments to be met on debentures the hockey club is asking for donations from the sporting public early in the season rather than waiting until all these debts have been incurred which seems a sensible busi nesslike approach we hope they meet with success many business items at childrens aid meet mrs w a weaver presided at
