two new faces on council next year and one new member of county council all offices were filled by accla- matiof at mondays nomination meeting in st reeve george leslie who is county wai den is retiring as well as william schenk glen williams who has been a council member for two years deputy reeve wilfrid bird will step up to the reeveahip and coun cillor walter llnham becomes dep uty reeve councillor george cur rie remains on the council and spencer wilson and campbell sin clair are the new councillors william debbie john h bing ham and robert j cunningham were returned as members of the school area board for two year terms and james kirkwood ballin- afad was nominated to serve a one ajear term vacated by hector bird leslie retiring retiringaftrseven years on council and holdpff the highest honour an county politics this year reeve george leslie spoke of the problems of assessment and equali zation which a fast growing county there has been a ten million dollar increase in assessment in one year in 1953 an equalization was arrived at after several meet ings between municipal assessors and the county committee avoid ing appeals which have hampered county administration in the past mr leslie spoke of certain as pects of county work including roads the court house and centen nial manor a 30000 government cut in the road budget had reduced estimates for gravelling grading and work on county lhiks exten sive renovation work is being done on the county buildings which will include a new vault a law library j and redecorating j heflpoke of growth in the town ship reflected in 200000 in build ing permits issued and said future councils would face heavy expendi tures for roads schools and serv ices which suburban development entails bird new reeve the new reeve wilfrid bird dealt wtth other aspects of county work including the important re forestation program this year purchase of 05 more acres makes a total of 1200 acres now owned by the county for tins and h spoke stirringly of the obligations of municipal ser- vte erin resident was native of ireland father of three georgetown res idents thomas henry cobura 85 died in erin on november 24th he had been in ill health for over a year mr cobum was born in ljsburn county antrim ireland a ship builder by trade he came to can ada in 1926 and had lived in erin since then surviving are hia wife margaret jane mcmaster and eight children mrs john pinkney may and charles erin robert mrs wray matthews elsie and mrs gordon lingard ethel toronto jack and norman georgetown and mrs mervyn kirby margaret of glen williams there are nine grand children one sister mrs john bell lives at lisburn archdeacon w g o thompson conducted the funeral service on thursday at the weddeli funeral home erin with interment follow- in erin cemetery long illness fatal tor mrs alex mcftay a resident of esquesing town ship all her life mrs alex mckay died in guelph general hospital on friday seriously 111 for the past two years she bore her suffer ing with heroic fortitude she had entered the hospital only a day before her death the former agnes jane cole she was born whll her parents wil liam cole and margaret jane reid lived on the 61h line later they moved to a farm on the 10th line and she attended clay hill school she married mr mckay 22 years ago and for the past few years they had been residents of silver- creek mrs mckay was a faithful mem ber of ballinafad united church where she was active in the wom an s missionary society besides her husband she is survived by a brother and shortuts former position of finishing room foreman at the same time ross duncan has been promoted from plant superintendent to manager of the mill mr dickie came to georgetown from scotland in 1913 as colour room foreman and held that posi tion until his promotion four years ago he is a past president of the quarter century club at the mul on monday afternoon all mem bers of the staff gathered
