around again so soon af ter the last season this time of the year is one in which everyone has fun takes a holiday and re laxes but most of us forget the real meaning of christmas while we are merrymaking and stuffing ourselves many families forget what they are really celebrating consequently christmas today is a highly commercialized holiday in which most people spetflt their time loafing and eating the underly ing meaning is really forgotten and it is our own fault there is noth ing wrong with having a genuine merry christmas but dont forget what it really means we should al practice the spirit of christmas throughout the year we would like to take this opportunity of wishing everyone a really merry christmas but remember when your are cele brating what youre celebrating students anticipate the new building the addition to ghs is fast beg inning to look like a building it seems to be a favourite pastime to gaze at the workers and superin tend the job fitjm the windows of ghs the frames of the windows have been installed and the out side work almost completed in mates of fourth form were glad to notice that a new boiler will be installed in the addition and maybe then some heat will seep into the room which has an average temp erature of 65 degrees there are had been the conspirators every thing was quiet and no hands were raised so he had to tlo it the hard way he asked each iboy except one and when everyone denied the charge his eyes travelled to the one remaining boy no words were nee ded for a pair of very red ars gave him away it was decided to have a solemn procession into our room while the culprit with help of one who usually does these things took down the shoes but as the bell went the two boys became thirsty and as our principal went out of twe door crawled up the ladder and thiifj evaded the embarrassing epi sode when we returned to school the next day the two pairs of run ning shoes were down from the cel ling but could not be found it was found out later that the shoes had been put behind the books on the book shelf we all hop that we have as much fun in the new year as we did in the old which reminds me happy new year new olive drabties and melton several reasons therefore why the hats have been issued to the cad ets and parades have been adjour ned till the new year ajs bob ahena former ghser gave a talk to the grade ix boys about the navy courses he is tak ing he ansyrered many questions about navy life and training and advised the boys to stick at school and get at least junior matricula tion i would like to take this space to wish all the readers a very mer ry christmas and a happy and a prosperous new year er is looney bin well rft long last winter is here for a while it looked as if we would be having a green christmas but now with our recent snowfalls we will be having a white christmas our christmas exams will be af ter christmas again this year they start on january 21st and run thru to the 28th so during the holidays we poor souls of middle and upper school will be starting our stud ies about two weeks ago the school saw the picture tale of two cit ies it was very kind of the how ard wrigglesworth school to give us the use of the auditorium but if the lower school people act as they did than the new school will be taboo for ghs they left a mess new addition is being watched with interest examinations start on january 21st the time tabic for examinations of middle and upper school was announced two weeks ago the ex aminations commence on the twen ty first of january and continue on into the next week the three a year system of examinations which was asked for was rejected even though milton has a satisfactory three a year system with the ad dition of another teacher there have been more tests on each sub ject regularly which it is hoped will help build up the marks bet ter than last years low editor says thanks to high tales staff thanks to those who help to make a paper not too many people realize how much time and work is done in preparing high tales and so we wrfuld like to say thanks to all those who help us mrarm- strong and his commercial class de serve a big thank you for all the time they spend trying to untangle some reporters writing and for typ ing all material in this newspaper mr j l lambert our principal also deserves thanks for reading through our material and sifting it as to good or bad as the spirit moves choir report i by bev hyde the editor of high tales very nicely came up a week agd and yelled in mj ear that i was to write an extra long report about every thing that has happened during the year well here goes every thing went along as usual ith the general noise filling the nails of gh until an announce ment was read from a scroll by a page none other than our music teacher which said that the choir had been invited to sing at st john s united church of george town in november then the fun began new songs that we never knew existed were brought out by terry buurley its that tdne- again christmas bringing with ull the cheer that it is noted for christmas has dif ferent meanings wrvarious people along with itsffrbe meaning it means to us the time as come for exams report sheets and holidays to me in particular it means that i have to try to relate to you a summary of the first term thinking back i can recall a cool morning in september and groups of students huddled at every door each in turn telling his adventures and mishaps of the summer holi days a new teacher joins the staff while the classes are still in the mixup stage and fheyhbvent calmed yet time passes and 1 can see the football team being chosen and getting into what they call phape our once green iiuglike campus becomes a big hole in the ground as the foundations for the new addition is being constructed as the periods drag by the deten tions that word sounds familiar get overexercised the football team loses sparky stays the new part of the school goes up and lvs just about time to finish the htdry and there just happens to be a grand windup brewing in mr lamberts office in the shape of re port sheets and no matter which way you spe it it always means ine taid in more ways than one for some of us just the same i am wishing you all a merry christmas and a happy new year i may as well throw ina poem there once was father named snoot who lookedgood in his santy claus suit as he neared his sons lbedv- the boy woke up arid said jcut the comeay pop where s the loot don t twist my arm i quit wednesday evening dec m ibm the air arm and is presently stationed at london we wish alt the luck in the world to psful in this new venture in closing i wish to bestow to you cram the looney bin a very merry christmas and a happy new and writers all deserve a big hand because they are the ones who real ly have to think outour material even though some of i doesnt show much thought we hope this good work will continue in the new term making a better paper for all them were thought up by the cul- prits in the alto section no matter how hard we tried everything went off very well at the church and even our choir leader was proud of us after this was over everything again settled down to normal but not for long another invitation had been wangled by our choir master we were to sing at guelph on december 13 1953 this time carols were brought out and the altos found that they could sing soprano if they had to and so we were off to guelph on the bus with strict orders from headquarters about gum chewing we landed safely in the church and service went beautifully until the fireside the triple trio after changing seats about ten times finally got settled and carols were sung then came our big moment up we got into a beautifully straight line lh front of the people only to find that everybody had music but the altos there were three very red faces as we finally secured a sheet of music and began to sing but to add in sult to injury we came to a part in the song where it had been a ritual at practices to giggle believe it or not it was funny and so be ing unable to control ourselves we giggled all through the page we received only a few frowns and as the song ended ran to our seats and b to laugh we found out one thing while we were there and that was that the ladies of the church will serve a beautiful lunch to both gigglers and nongigglers well heres a great big merry christmas from the choir and also a very happy new year grade xii retort merry christmas merry christ mas there we got it in before anybody else every room ha now drawn nam es for our christmas party and ev eryone is tryint to think of some original prank to play on the poor unsuspecting person whose name was on the paper the two pairs of running shoes which were hanging from a hook on the ceiling have finally been taken down a week or so ago our dear principal happened to peek into our room we were taking latin at the time and saw the running shoes hanging there he came back with that grin on his face and asked who w tsest wishes lor a fire safe festive season georgetowkfire dept eight pupils visit county court session plmklii mil tlhtlllsr triantie 725m plumbing and heatinr that losing all our victories didnt squelch our school spirit come on kids you must agree we had a wonderful time even though we lost almost all the football games and nearly hit rock bottom at the field meet thanks to the boys our spirits rose tho when we dis covered that through the terrible defeat two girls from ghs had come through with championships dianne harrison securing the in termediate and eileen oates the senior one boy does deserve cre dit for capturing for his second year the hakf mile trophy natur ally this was none other than paul barber who has now we are sor ry to say left us to go into the fleet air arm he will be missed by all we also can add to our collection of memories those of the football dance held at the howard wrig glesworth school i think we can safely say from both the staffs and students point of view that all had a good time the highlight of that evening was miss parkinson s piano solo to which all merrily danced the schottische although there wete many complaints con cerning the doughnuts at the time we are happy to say we never heard s of any disastrous after effects so all in all it turned out to be the most successful party in our three years ofour high school days a hearty thanks to the student coun cil for this well organized evening of fun from this you readers must agree that we have had our full share of fun in this past term this week brought an unusual quiet atmos phere to the school this was cau sed by a mysterious visitor who had such influence that grade xis waste basket better noted for hol ding apple cores orange peels etc had to be emptied miss ann hyde doing- the honours of course by now you must know we mean the inspector who by the way missed our room completely our bulletin board drew throngs of long faced students this week when the examination time table was posted on it incidentally they start january 21st 19mk this though has an advantage and a disadvantage the results cannot prevent santa claus from arriv on schedule but can t you picturen us studying ferociously over the holidays ahem the closing tidings we would like to leave with
