of tha cwmjl i interest in politics lacking a pitifully small attendance to hear a major political figure was in evidence when the provincial ccf leader spoke here last week if one subtracts the party stalwarta who came from out of town one could almost count the audience on one hand and if one subtracted the local party executive from this our twoyearold son could have done a fair job of counting and his limit is four it does not speak well for a democracy to show ao little interest in things political and it ia discouraging to think that only a dozen or ao ore interested enough to hear frrst hand the platform of a political party from the man who is best qualified to give same last weeks meeting was only one ex ample of a situation which has been preva lent in our time it is not unique with any one political organization for we have seen liberal and conservative rallies almost as de void of listeners though by virtue of having toll highways in style reading of a new express highway for buffalonew york city traffic makes us wonder if such toll highways in ontario might not aolve some of our major problems anyone who has driven in new york state haa been impressed with the excellent travelling conditions much superior to those which we enjoy at home for every queen ejizabeth way in ontario we have a no 7 highway and we fear that our highway mon ey is being spent on the major throughwaya to the neglect of the equally fmportant sub- art eriea that salary question if mondays council meeting has ended at eleven instead of after midnight perhaps members would have been thinking more clearly and not put themselves in the position of voting themselves a salary increase only two meetings after they had turned the same question down blame it on the lateness of the hour or what you will we must take exception to a resolution for a bylaw to pay councillors a rat 200 annual allowance in place of the pre sent five dollars a meeting we dont object on the ground that the increase is not justified that is another story which also haa its pros and cons we do ob ject on three important points first that an increase in town expense of two to three more active supporters of these parties a somewhat better allowing waa made the aad fact is that any political meeting whether dur ing un election year or out of season draws only active party members and the meeting serves no particular purpose other than re affirmation of ideals by the faithful few perhaps the only way to arouse political awareness is to have joint meetings with rep resentatives of all parties on the platform as we have suggested before a form of govern ment cannot survive forever unless people know what they have and know what each political organization plans for the future if one is to vote intelligently in provincial and federal elections it most certainly behooves us to listen to men who can explain their party policy otherwise we vote in the dark and someday we will stub our toes badly and cosnplain when its too late possibly the 5 00 toll charge on this huge american expenditure is their way of reserving funds for the smaller highways if ao were all for it in ontario were tired of tilivelling highways which are always half- done and never completed ilie no 7 situa tion is repeated everywhere you drive in our provinee new for ten miles middling good for another ten torn up in one spot then new for another it must be even more discourag ing to the tourists we lure from the beautiful american roads than it is to us bumpharden ed veterans hundred dollars does not jibe with the strict economy and close adherence to the bud get which council talked about after striking the tax rate second that unless there is a bharp change in circumstances to warrant re opening a question there is no justification after a decision has once been made and third ly the fact that the original motion for in crease was defeated by voles of two members who were unavoidably absent monday when a bylaw has been prepared and assuming that the municipal board approves the change which it must do before it can be come law the matter wll come before coun cil for a final hearing it will be interesting to see how a full council will deal with it at that time well filled church hear easter message sjwui btutcr ervl wreliad tt tha georgetown baptist cfauwfa on sunday to well
