compu- eated household eovolving more than one wife the u law permit man to do w and when we chatted with mr charagh chaud- hary ha explained that while lt not against tht law to have more than ona wife yet there are to many technicalities which must ho adhered to vary few- moslem men avail themselves of this dubious privilege lie told us that in his native pakistan it is very uncom mon to meat a man who has mor than ona wife mr chaudhary haabeen stay- ins at the horn of mr and mrs bui uoney normandy blvd while studying agricultural machinery methods used tn this section of canada he is a pakistan govern- menl representative sent here to learn and take to his native land many of our ideas and met of agriculture in pakistan he is known officially as senior operations off icer of the thai development auth ority which has 36 departments mr chaudhary and seven other countrymen have been here eight months already under the famed colombo plan this summer they will go as far west as alberta one of the eeahon8 for this study of canadian egrlcul- tural methods and machinery is the fact that all ho he is a grad uate in agriculture from the pun jab university he is also a master of science and botany and is well acquainted with the theoretical side of the most modern farm machin ery his country hss almost no ac tual machinery for their graduates to study and learn to operate pakjhtan is eeally quite a new country having come into existence in 1047 when it wai partitioned from india it la situated at the northwest and eastern part we had to consult on old public school geography to re fresh our memory on the lay of the land and there are really two sec tions isolated on either side of in dia the land is very fertile and is irrigated by a vast network of canals this together with tht fact that the weather allows crops to be grown the year round makes pak istan the only country in the vic inity with s surplus of food that is quite an interesting fact when you take into consideration it is only onetenth of the size of i can ada with a population of bo mil lion its population ranks fifth in the entire world inevitably when you talk with someone from the other side of the world the weather comes in for quite a bit of discussion of course they have a rainy season instead of snowy season but in the northern parts in their cooler season the temperature ranges between 28 and 70 degrees and snow does fall in the mountainous regions and when these snows melt in the sum mer they help feed the irrigation canals in the hot months the plumbing ntow bathroom mtaitotl or wmntfcjjfjtl water sysuus of ail kiwis v chawje xfixzu ternperatur varies from degree up to 20 degrees now that la really suiling uot it but here la a surprising thing when we asked mr chaudhary how it was possible to live or rather move in such heat s said ha could take their 100 degree temperature better than his taste of our 80 per cent temper ature sitting out in b1u honeys gladioli garden and our winter cold did not bother turn too much as he uvea in the more moderate aertton but the men who jive in the hotter part of pakistan wars several weeks od justing to the ex treme cold their climate at borne he likened to that of south amer ica in the northwestern section of pakistan every fruit known la grown except pineapples and cocoa- nuts and they are found in the eastern sector in the northwest they grow wheat cotton and sugar cane while the eastern part produces rice and jute vegetables grow all the year round since tue hindus left the country 7 years sgo there has been very little industry but this is slowly being developed now together with a whole new concept of living gone completely la the old caste system there is now equal opportunity for everyone and from the eatrarnee of pitiable pov erty srvd fabulous weslth a self-re- pcvtlng hardworking middle class is emerging which has democratic rights freedom of speech wor ship and press and they like us cart gccome eligible thru their own eltorti to fill the highest positions in the country a very high proportion of psk- latanl youth are university gradu ate mr chaudhary speaks and understands english perfectly since english is the economic language of pakistan pakistan exhibit a grrat loyalty to our queen and is an independent country in the liriush commonwealth of nstlons with a govcrnoi general appointed by the queen the ssme as we have the languages commonly spoken in pakistan are of course pakistani and hindustani these tongues are spoken the same but one is written from left to right and the other from right to left the army speaks a language called urdu continued on page 11 price amd performance international trucks sattaubirlbsmslllldla i sfowltlswuievbyfr utuiu uw
