communities where ataggering fin ancial losaes were exceeded in tragedy by heavy loaa of life dally paper and television accounts of the disaster show it to be the worst ever in canada and the winnipeg flood pales into re lative insignificance and the sarnia tornado seems to be nothing when compared with this present catastrophe as one of those fortunate towns not touched by flood or hurricane we should be particularly generous while others are dig ging out their homes a1 we have to do is dig a few dollars out of our pocket and perhaps deny ourselves one little luxury to provide one a cultural treat showing of a group of paintings by aus tnan artists last weekend brought a cultural treat to more than a hundred art lovers who viewed them in the public library it is good to see such things coming to town and we hope that the library may moxe and more become known for such auxiliary functions to ita major purpose as a dispenser of good reading industrial rumours start this week we heard the first well found ed rumour about georgetowns new indus tries this one came via a source which re ported someone appointed manager of a fu ture georgetown branch and had more than a ring of authenticity time of course will tell and meanwhile it would not be proper to convert rumour into partfoct by putting the company name in print these types of rumours can of course cause no harm and we enjoy the game as much as the next man it reminds us of the puzzler during wartime when one wag want- who was right we hate to say we told you so but there should be a few red faces at the dept df education when a future request is made for an extension on the new acton high school and an extension on the extension at georgetown we quite well remember being a mem ber of a delegation which saw a new george town building turned down flat and a new acton school cut to a minimum and barely have the new buildings been opened when the school board must again discus additions with georgetown showing definite signs of large scale growth in the very immediate future it might be wise for immediate con- w euchre party goes on despite bad storm fridays storm cut down the ex pected necessity for flood victims georgetown has a proud record of past giving ihuusands of dollars went to british war victims more thousands to winnipeg and sariuu and most recently to uritam and hoi kind whrn thosr countries were flooded at present with more residents than ever beforr no unemployment and a general standard of living unsurpassed anywhere in canada it would le fitting to sec georgetown at the top of the list of donors and reuiemler the need is most urgent a fust s money is received by the local u thonties it will he forwarded to the central headquarters in 1 oronto and dispersed thru this proper source to deserving people lvery available dollar will go to where it is needed one is not hypocritical in hoping for more art displays when not oneself a purticu lar art fancier we believe that a communit should have varied interests to suit the tastes of all its citirns and culture in all forms is a good thing and the arts ft crafts organi zation deserves a particular pat on the baclc for bringing such a display for the enjoyment of district people ed to know winch was the best authority a usually reliable source or an unusually re liable source come what may the new subdivision may bring the art of conversation so badly dented by tv baclc into fashion for no one can resist talking about the towns big news were looking forward to the long winter evenings and the mental stimulation of won dering if company a is really going to come to georgetown and whether company b will diversify our industrial picture sideration of a complete new high school again with the present building becoming the third public school which is definitely in the picture now it is certainly not possible to add to the present high school without either wrecking the playing field building on the space ear marked for an auditorium or creating an architectural nightmare of old and new struc tures and whatever materializes we hope the present school board members will be better arguers than we were and not be pushed off with half a loaf when only a loaf will do nyuetfl rusco u mir o1mt0mms combination screen storm door a screen door and a sturui door all in tmr jurt rate
