the can adian plowing team at the second an qua world plowing match at kit- lamey ireland recently returned to canada with team members james ke- rles oi brampton ont and robert timbers or mounviue ont here is the lint of his reports on the trip try wllll rvjilcb what happened at the world plow ing match la ireland thats a que tion ive been asked frequently since my return to canada and most peo ple who ask it really mean why did not jimv fcarcles or bob timbers bring borne the ksso golden i mow it wuo something a lot of people expected since jim won the trophy at the first annual world plowing match at cobourg ont last year and a few days before that hob timbers won the canadian plowing championship defeating jim kccles in the process as most of my readers will know by now the hsso gulden plow symbol of world tractor plowing supremacy went to hugh harr of northern ire land with lelic dison of un lain as runnerup out of 23 competitors from 13 countriri jim eccic finish ed eijht and hob timbers 13th one thing our first overseas world match taught us was that contestants who live in or near the country where the match is held will always have a certain advantage they are able to take ample equipment to the match slong with whsttver extra parts they think they might need this sdvsntage is perhaps more obvious to us now than it was last year when jim and hob came first and third respeclive- among the world champion ship in n it s un their home uil it wascer tainl in evid i net this j tar when out of the top fist plow mi n three were from either ireland or kngland and the remain inn two came from t inland and llol land our bojs would have partly oct come this geographical handicap by taking their own plows overseas had the foreseen how things would turn out the unl canadian plow avail ablt to them in ireland were omt thai had im n suit uwr in llmfl and which wire not in match conditipn it vtas a little like expecting a champion iiitirkmnan to compete against other championship with a rifle he had ne ct set n im fore in his life another problem which bothered all contestants to more or less the same t xlcnt wav the quality of the soil its if j ror cant our ns lud lwt n used to plowing in a deep hcasy soil that produce a pancake type of fhrrow tht loose soil of the irish land was a nu experience jht rt are certain sptcial attachnunts th it plowmen art tntitlid to ust umlir world rules and it is possihlt that if our hoys hid had thres line might haw done bet ur inith in stubble and in sod lower the soil was quite stony just a f w inches below the surface i condition that even a special at tachnunt would not haw overcome having toured much of ireland by this time ut ft it th rc were other sitts that would have been more suit ildi fur a world plotting match than tht land thtrt on the mental hospital rarm at gortfoc which is just two milts from hillarney on the other hand i doubt if they could haw pick cd a more beautiful setting if they bad suried evt r possible site in the world the fields themselvts lay be tween beautiful bills on the wist anil the magnificent lakes of killarney on the tast and as if to makt things cwn more perfect the irish upheld their r putation for being among the most gracious hosts in the world the crowds and there were some 10000 spectators on each day of trre two day match cheered the contestants wherever they appeared they knew our jim ecclcs by the publicity he had received in the irish press and radio and he got a special hand from the crowd particularly in the two- mil o parade of tracton including all the competing plowmen that moved from killamey to the site of the match on opening day j j we stayed in a l lovely hotel in h killarney and in ph addition we had hb wonderful aeeom- v mod a lion a m farm with a moat w generous and jm considerate ir- h uh farmer who in accordance h with plans arran- gad oy the world jusvsscim plowing organ tatlon adopted our two plowmen during the practice days prior to the match making sure they could con centrate on practicing without having to- worry about other things though we didnt bring home the cjisjupioushlp w all fait the whole trip was morertham worthwhile we t dsu t taw a lot of things thatwre new to us and we were treated like kings wherever we vest being feted at ban quet after bajsquet attended by such dignitaries as premier john costeuo and the lord mayor of dublin and i think that by taking part in the first match outside canada we gained e lot of practieaf experience thai will prove valuable when we pass it along to joe tran lftm canadian champion and runner up ivar mc laughlin who will be competing as the canadian teansnext year in swe den j our main point ofjdvice to them will be that thcyakelheir own plows to the match with them as many of the european contestants did this year the germans even brought their own tractors and we will also urge them to get sll the practice they can at the site of the match for not until they gel there will they know what the plow ing conditions arc or how often bad wvather might prevent them from practicing despite the helpfulness of our irish farmer host our boys ne ver got a chance to practice in sod at all theyeiad time to practice only in stubble if they take thee step we feel that the new canadian team stands a good chanee of bringing home the kvso cold en
