decline due to the in road of margarine and if the exper m nee in the lniled states can be la ken ai an indication of what u to hap pen in this country surplus butter will more and more become a problem which could seriously affect the whole anadian dairy industry retort world war ii us eituen- were consuming 17 s lbs of butter earh year hut with the fabulous rise in margarine consumption below thi liorder the average american now tisea only bt pounds of butter per rar in canada the picture is quite a bit bnghtt r karh canadian con yumrt 20 pounds of buttir in a year hut that figure can be misleading in viiw of the fact the butter ublitut is mt hegmntnk to make itsrlf ft u and is banned entirel in somt prov i rices the fact that canadians bought m arly i tmthwn fiound inum ll margarine in the first ninr months of 10m than tht did in thr aim p nod in 1053 is an indication thai canada too ik moiing in the direction of low butler consumption if thtii margarine al were txing mad exclusively in our hit cities anionic tht laboring classes we would find it understandable even though still shortsighted in thii da of high food price it t natural for the man i n alar to look fur a bargain to ct lie for the law r priced substitute e pecially when that substitute u avattl to be almost indiscernable from the original c find that understandable from the wareearners viewpoint and ct it could still prove shortsighted thrift if his paltry savings on one item of food ultimately led to hu un employment and that could happen it hai already happened at the frost and wirod harm implement plant in smiths i alls which has stopped pro duction for rood but completely incomprehensible to us are the substantial sales of margar ine which are being made over the counters of local stores and in other towns like ours which are dependent on the dairy industry for their very existence in our opinion every al exandrian who uses margarine instead of butter is not only shortsighted but stupid he or she may sec a saving of a few cents on their grocery bills and yet in course of time may sec their cry livelihood lost because mar nanne has helped depress ttic dairy industry iven the storekeeper who makes a small profit on the butter substitute may live to rue the day when his dairyman customers can no longer buy will the margarine makers keep him in business most shortsighted of all without oojill arc those producers of milk who not only arc using margarine on their own farm tables but are so ob liging at to buy it by the case for their poor city cousins in montreal who are deprived of it by that bad duplessis if those glengarry farmers stopped to think that cvory pound of margarine they purchased could be adding to the milk s and thus holding down the price at which their own milk is sold they might realize they them solves axo partly responsible for the depressed state of the dairy industry today and plenty of glengarry dairy arc buying margarine in quantity it seems not a little disheartening to see dairy farmers buying margar ine for home consumption while their own dairy farmcks of canada associa tion is trying to cut the inroads of the substitute by advertising its always dcttcv with butter weve never tasted margarine to our knowledge not because of any antipalhy to 1tstastc but because wc nre convinced it is a poor buy for any one dependent as we on a prospering dairy industry and we can think of very few of tho road ere of this riaper who might be able to justify its use on economical grounds a tonny saved on margar ine in our eyes makes
