john gunn who u reelected chairmen for a second term of office gave a detail ed review of the years activities his report was as follows during the past year your cbam bar of commerce has made a num ber of modest contributions to the welfare of georgetown because of a rather late start in ibm a full pro gram was not underlakenbut a foundation has been laid for further work this year wltl the develop ments now taking place in george town the work of the chamber of commerce should become increps- action on the part of the town coun cil a start has been made and the chamber of commerce if it is felt desirable will try to gain support in an effort to enlarge and improve the lot the parking situation in gen eral will be kept under surveillance and the chamber will cooperate in any effort made to improve it from time to time 0 4 playground swings in 19m the chamber continued its program of providing further playground equipment for children several sites were contidurvd including the fair grounds but as swings had been in stalled there the previous year it was felt that a site id aome other part of commerce should become increps- 7 j ugly important in this regart more 1 h uld u te time 1 wish to thank the mayor reeve and councillor for the advice and assistance which they have rendered to the chamber of commerce in the past year with out their cooperation the taafcs whick we undertook would have been difficult if not impossible with the same council sitting in 10s5 1 know we can count on their support in a greater year and i personally wish to thank the officers and directors of the chamber of commerce who have worked with me in the past year what was ac complished was through the fine spi nt which existed among us the e operation and helpful advloe which i ncrived made my pot it inn most plea sant attendance at our directors meetings was most encouraging at will as at any special protect in the latttr respect mention must be made of union members the town maintcn ance crew the hydro crew and oth ers who rendered assistance when cal led upon if the same good spirit continues in 10m the success of the chamber s projects is assured specific projects of the chamber were as follows- 1 parking situation the first ef fort of the 10mm was an investiga tton of the parking situation in gor getown in the downtown area it was generally juried that at mid year in sufficient space was available for cu torn parking under the situation exist ing at that time a number of idea were considered such as enforcing the twohour parking by taw parking meters voluntary removal by the mer chants of their cars from the main street during business hours and the feasibility of a parking lol since the merchants and business men of main street were directly concerned all were urged to attend a meet ing sponsored by the chamber to discuss the matter although four tern different bus in esses e were re presented at the meeting and it wis generally agreed that the parking l law should be enforced when this was presented to council the latter felt that a majority of those conccr ncd were not represented and the motion was defeated from this matter hcmorr a parking lot wan eventually developed as a result of eire jflemorial bfoeal a monument builf of enduring granite or marble symbolic in design and reverent in purpose resting in lurroundmgs of peace and beauty a tribute of respect and honor to the dead a constant source of inspiration to the living we do not employ salesmen or canvassers you pay no commissions manufacturer and designers of playground type swings were install vd therv wub the fpendid cooperation of the parents in that art a these swings have britfi lurried over to the town for kubaequent care and inairv u nance the area where tlusc swing are loroted could wtll become a ust ful park mid playground area for that part of town and the chamber of commerce may considt r further pio jtxts thtrc 3 park galea in line with its pol icy of making improvements lo the park the chamber of commerce was instrumental in having park gates er ecled at the entrance it was known that lht women s instilue was inwr rsted in some projcl for the park and so a joint meeting of a committee of the ladies with the chamber of comimrce was held at which it wd agreed to trctt cut stone pillars sub seqmntl the town council was ap proached for the purpose of putting in a sidewalk from charles street to the entrance 1 he council agreed to this and by the opining day of thi fair the stone pillar- and new side walk were in place although the chamber had plumud to share the cost the w omens institute requested that it be allowed u pay the entire price to commemorate this work the hambcr has ordtred a brass plaque to be placed on one of the pillars crediting the ladies for their work asulcd by the chamber of com merce although plans have not been made for this year s park project it is expected that at the next regular nutting pruposals wilt be consider ed and some plan adopted l a stone wall will be built from each small stone pillar to the limits of the road nghtof way and perhaps iron gates may be hung from the large pillars other suggestions could be the landscaping of the en tranc providing shelters and so forth 4 christmas activities this rlr the campaign to cxund the c hrist mas lighting along main street was continued with the cooperation of the rmrchants the town maintenance crew and the hdro en w a special canvass of the mi reliant was made for fundi from which more lights were purchased as will as christmas trtts which wirt mounted on the liuht standardi while the chambtr would have lik eel to enter a float in this year s christmas parade the proposal was made too late to injure a thorough job and so this endeavour was held oer this year however an early start can be made and with the co operation of other local organlza tions as well as the chambers in milton and acton a real effort could be made tn support a large parade on a rotating basis 5 special events in october a general meeting with a dinner was held in the hall of st johns united church the guest speaker that night was dr eg kaludi town planning consultant who contributed to the location of the ilex llcalop housing project here at that meet ing dr faludi outlined what could be done by town planning and in general term deacrlbed the
