into the dark as bad been our wont for the past week when we heard it no more would that throbbing motor bring a stab of uneasiness as it see med to veritably akim our rooftop we know better now inquiring am ong the neighbors had set our mind at rest we know now what the plane was no plane at all but a die- set locomotive flying up the- cnr tracks at the tame time each night an overactive imagination plus at mospheric conditions which some- times xlo make the v ound a if they are on the tracks sure had us worried for a while talking about noises at night a chap who has just recently re turned from v in ting vancouver tells us that at 000 pm every evening he heard a big boom as if from a cannon he never did find out whe ther it was a curfew or not but he suspected it was for looking out of his hotel window right afterwardi he noticed the streets were empty of people and they seemed to pretty well stay that way contrary to some of the unfavourable publicity vancouver has been receiving of lste he says it is very quiet city in the evening 3 we were glad to hear that the georgetown string quartet has rrsuiml practising again it is about three years since they lait played together the group has been meeting one evening a week during th winter in each others homes they practise or play for their own pleasure mainly doing compositions by bach mozart and handel j i iambert plays the viola archie kerr 2nd violin keith llarber cello and mrs j it staines first violin next year the players hype to enlarge thp group we were doubly glad to hear about the string quartet because it gave us an opportunity to learn sonic interesting facts abouj their newest member mrs staines sj mrs staines myrra started her musical career early at the age of five as a matter of fact when she was seven she started competing in musical festivals in kngland which she tells us are aim tlar to those in can ada exrrpt hat they arc on a much larger scale she was very successful in these competitions and has a large collection of medals and cups attesting to her talent it was only natural that she should make a career of her music studying with the koyal academy of music in london for some years the piano was her primary interest with thr violin her secondary study one ol the highlights of her years at the academy was playing the violin in the royal academy orchestra at the time sir henry wood conducted after she left the academy myrra taught music in a iriva ate girls school and also did a lot of piano accompanying for professional singers adding to her versatility and serving her country as well during the yar myrra joined the waak o become a wireless op orator needless to say in addition to her regular duties she was great ly in demand as an entertainer when they became aware of her musical accomplishments myrra comes by her musical tal ents quite honestly her father is an excellent singer and her mother had a musical academy of her own in northern kngland her father took up making violins as a hobby and turned his hobby into quite a suc cess myrra used to play concerts on his violins her three sisters all play musical instruments and the family found great pleasure in playing together in spite of the fact that the piano is her first study myrra telu us it seems that now she plays the vio lin more than the piano members of st georges have enjoyed hearing her accompany mrs w f bradley at lhe organ on easter sunday and at thn induction service of their new rector speaking with a former rcc- tor of st georges at the recep tion following the induction ca nonfred wasc of dunnvillc wu thought it was of interest to icaryt that his daughter mary has also made music her career she is teaching mu sic at the schools in brighton thin year now
