a kraall creek and in spite of the fact that eastern canada uwl united state are their natural habitat weve never beanf of tbera before have you what the mud puppy actually re sembles is a bis lizard the resem blance to a puppy or doff hegms and ends with their kills they are equal ly at home on land or in the water being supplied with a set of external gilis located at the back of their jiead on either side as well as internal lungs these gills are long and fea tbery looking amf hang down like the ears of a spaniel they are quite fascinating to watch as they expand and contract ob yea we almost for got mudpuppiea have something else in common with doga four short legs 0 to bicomi a urrtk srientl fie for a moment the encyclo pedia lists a mud puppy as a great salamander of the primitive or der of amphibia called lrotetda got that to put it more simply the creature is about ib long lu wrinkled skin is a dark gray colour wili light gray blot c her and it hi a fairly long tail fl attended vertically if it werent for its head and fare whleb rather resemble a frog except that its eyes are small and beady the mud puppy looks like a small alltga lor a little research on the subject yields the information that these un uaual animals have a lifespan of about twenty three years after they hatch from their eggs they stay under w ter most of the time although their legs snd internal lungs enable them to scurry about on land if they wiih 0 as wl mi mt iow id before there was a whole family of mud puppies near sepside and bill hamilton gave one to town fore man hraie hyde to show to his faro hy the hyde boya took it to achool in a big pail so the atudenu could have an opportunity to study the tome- what rare specimen not knowing exactly what diet mud puppies prefer when we last heard it was thriving on commercially prepared fiah food we imagine by this time it hat been returned to a small itream similar lo the one where it originated because its original home has since been bull doxed out vc only hope it was pi crd in a fairl inaccessible crick imagine stepping onto the hack of one of those creatures when wad inn in a strtam although harmless as far as wc know thnr appearanct s odd enough to half scare uu to duth 0 we received a very nice let trr from kathy ankersmit last week written shortl afur she had arrived in calgary since coming out from holland
