division of the cw na dayfoot name gone from georgetown with the dealt of charlea brown dayfoot in hit nlnetyflrtt year in oak bay victoria bc on july 5fh4har peued from the scene one of the lei mem beva of a plorwor georgetown family whose rujrna was known not only locally but in frontier points of northern ontario and quebec end in the west c b as he was familiarly known lo the busi ness fraternity was the second son of john b day- foot founder of the dayfoot shoe business their product was for over one hundred years a synonym for strong durable comfortable footwear used by prospectors loggers surveyors fermers miners riv er drivers cowboys end later by skiers the firm took greet satisfaction in the thought that it had play ed e worthy pen in opening up canadian frontiers by providing quality boots for those engaged in that work the butinest had been started first at a tannery at grimsby by john b dayfoot and hit brothor philo w dayfoot who had emigreted from their nalife vermont in 1838 later it wat moved to george town end loceted on the dayfoot homettead on the corner of mcnabb and john street then known at tennery street after a few years the tannery wat destroyed by fire but the manufacture of work boots was continued after j b dayfoot s death the business wat car ried on by hit son charles who had been educated at the georgetown public school now chapel street school at the old academy in college view and at woodstock college years later he formed a partner ship with hit younger brother and sitter horry c and gertrude h dayfoot and registered at c b dayfoot and co house numbers please hydro tupennfendent gerry mccallum thinks he it fighting a losing battle but he s still gamely trying to persuade people to put numbers plainly on their house we all must realize that georgetown has grown past the point where everybody knows everybody there was a time a few years back when anyone in public business knew practically every resident by light and if they didn t know ust where they lived it could always be described as next door to soand so now the situation has changed and it s reached the point where a street address becomes important take the hydro staff for instance a trouble call comes for the home of mr smith on byron st there are dox ens of new houses in this subdivision and most of the pot pourri the lorne scots summer camp wouldn t be quite the same this year sgt arthur herbert whose record of service ooes back half a century missed attending camp for the first time in fifty years mr herbert who is still e valued member of the band had made vaca tton plans which couldnt be changed this year bill leslie of the roxy theatre esks us to pass on the news that parking in front of the theatre isn t banned just to be nasty a provincial lew makes it necessary for clearance to be allowed in front of theatres in case of fire and this is why the theatre is stressing the no parking angle daily newspaper stories of a shortage of provincial police personnel hardly jibe with a situation which arose in georgetown a year ago at that time opp headquarters insisted that a fourth officer be added to the georgetown detach ment because of population growth in spite of a re- for fifty two years he wes manager of the day- foot shoe firm through two world wart boom and depression the business continued until in 1944 it was sold and at the age of eighty he retired he and mrs dayfoot then moved to victoria where lie spent the last ten years of his life in quiet retirement their son rev arthur c dayfoot after five years as a mis slonary in china was appointed to trinidad in the service of the united church of canada in addition to his part in the business life of hit native town mr dayfoot will be remembered for his activities in church end community for sev eral years he was a valued member of the public lib rary board and later of the high school board dur ing the first war he took en aclive part in organizing local war time ectiviiiet he was a member fust of the baptist church and after church union of the uni ted church in the latter he served as always in hit own quiet way at an elder and for a thort time at sunday scliool tupenntendent mention thould alto be made of his leadership in tlie temperance move mont like his fathor before him he newr wavered in hit eifort to tound a warning against tlie human and economic damage due to beverage alcohol there it little likelihood that anyone with the name of dayfoot wll ever again be living in george town it would be fitting we tuggett that a family whoto roots go back to far thould have some perma nent recognition in town and perhaps with george town growing so fast it would be possible to name one ol our new streets after the family council or one of the housing subdividers could provide a link wilh past history by so doing people are new and not yet known to everyone if there is no street eddress the hydro men must call at e house blindly and it could be possible that the new residents in this house don t yet know all their neigh bours end they must make a second call or suppose the call it to 1552 byron street and the hydro men find only one or two houses on the street with numbers and the rest blank here again valuable time is lost en quiring when a number on the houte would locate it in a minute it s a simple operation and not costly to cooper ate aluminum numbers can be purchased in several local stores and there is a variety of other house numbers available if you haven t yet done so why not make if a point this week quest from the town council that the force be left et three men because council thought the town was ad equately served by three one of the last proper ties within the old town limits suitable for housing is in process of being filled up harold fobert who has also been building houses on sarah st is con structing fhree new houses on market st on property formerly owned by k m lengdon near the maple ave corner mr and mrs bill garbutt have mov ed into their newly built house on elgin street mr garbutt sold his sarah street house to lorne gilchrist whose
