canadian weekly newipsper association m and the ontario d vision of the c w n a a long way to go results of the community swimming pool cam palgn published elsewkere in this issue ae not loo optimistic for the eventual success of the 50 000 pro- somewhat over 15 000 is acknowledged in ch nd pledges and while there are many citizens still to hear from it is a question whether the whole 50000 will be in hand within a few weeks there have been disappointments as there are bound to be in a public campaign tt is all too easy for one to estimate what the other man can afford to give and it is unfortunate that names will be bandied about as contributing too little at the same time there are those who might give more than the publish ed figure and there are those who prefer to give on santa conies in style this year s santa claus parade in georgetown will set a new high in popularity if plans of the lions club work out the lions received a considerable boost last year from the firemen end senior public school grade wlto constructed a handsome sleigh which will bo used m future parades now this year a number of floats have been promised by merchants and industries and the parade will really be a parade emulating in a small way thoso of larger centres the santa parade is an event eagerly looked will you be there years of attendance at nomination meetings in town and township have made us wonder how inter ested the large percentage of people are in how mun lei pa i business is conducted we know of course that they aro interested from comments we hear every week about council news in the paper but seldom do citizens convert this interest into taking an hour or two to attend nom inatton end hear reports of the years business from those most qualified to give them the elected repre lenlative onymously and who will be branded as nongivers tn some people s eyes the bright si tie of the picture ae the donations from individuals and firms who might well not be ex pected to give et all a particularly fine gesture by a newmarket firm was used as the basis of an adver tisement in this issue others have come from con trading firms doing business in town and from non resident property owners they are all eppr eclated it is certain that every dollar that anyone feels he can contribute will be needed befor the happy day when the swimming pool opens and it is quite in order for a person to reassess his feeling on the mat tcr and to mako a further contribution to put it over the top forward toby children in town and the area around now it will have nioro appeal for tho grown ups too wrwa will gather downtown or along the highway par ede route which will start at lincoln motors at the old town boundary and continue down tho highway and along main street the efforts of tho lions and other public spirited oiieni who at this busy time of year spend valuable time in arranging the santa parado are certainly ap precieted and we take thi opportunity of publicly thanking them two such meetings are on the agenda next week monday night in esquesing community hall at stewarttown township residents will name candidates for election next year thursday night in town the public library will be the scene of a similar meeting for georgetown rate payers we still hope to see overflow crowds at both meeting i what better boost could you give men who have sorved faithfully the years term on council than to show you appreciate what they are doing some statistics for newcomers there ere so many newcomers to town that it might be helpful for them to briefly review the mum- opal setop in georgetown we have a 9 man council mayor reeve deputy end 6 councillors a 2 man hydro commission and 6man public school board the complete council it elected ratepayers approve a 1500 annual grant to the citizens band and whethetsthey approve the distri bution of natural gas at no cost to the municipality a person listed as an owner or tenant on the vo tor s list is eligible to run for any office his name must bo submitted by a movor or seconder during the one hour nominatoin period and he must either be pres ent at the meeting or send written notice that he in tends to seek office an important consideration for one seeking off ice is that if he is nominated for two things he mutt declare his intention at the meeting or the first nom ination will be considered valid nomination period it followed by a public meet ing at which council and elected and appointed boards give sketches of the years business there it a ques tion period following at
