weekly newspaper association and the ontario d vision of the cwna never a dull moment monday night we attended the fiftiettixid meet irvg of the town council this year it wav remarkable for two ihirvgt firtt it marked tin end of the utthutt tne of council meetings in ihe town history end instead of the utual final meeting which ciniom has dec ed as an unimportant one 1ille4with generalities auout the years business some routine motions and a lew appointments with members recessing an hour or two early business continued hot and heavy until almost midnight it indicated how busy the year had bean in the municipal field and forecast how active the 1956 coun dl will be with a glimpse of things to tome for instance high school board members repor ted initial action on a new high school wheh it is hop ed will be rushed for september occupancy and a town planning report was pre wn ted by or faludi which may lead to formation of a planning board and zoning of the town mot to me m ion the municipal building renovation the building of a third public school the taking over of roads in subdivisions and installation of street lights in new parts of the town municipal affairs have become the number one news feature in the herald and we consider it our number one reporting job to give people an accurate factual account of the tremendous amount of business that goes through council s hand in a year is not easy like everyone we like some spice and on occasion we go into some detail in quoting members on conlrovcriial issues while at times we have to pick and choose our words very carefully sometimes this spice is misinterpreted and we have heard people remark that council is a collection of dumbkoffs nothing could be farther from tfva truth we can rvonestly say that in fifteen years of council reporting there has never been a council which was not composed of men who took their job seriously and who did their best possible for georgetown s wel fare the 1v55 council followed m live tradition there was little time wasted and a weekly rrwt ing was necessary behind trw scenes wore hours too of committee work which was not reported in the press the job was timeconsuming for everyone and ratepayers owe a large vote of thanks 1o these nine men who shoulder the job of keeping the ship of state on an even keel 1956 as we have said will be no less onerous we have reserved our monday nights for our job and we shall continue to report council in detail to keep readers posted on every phase of municipal af fairs cmft follows rr4 baptist school sapper alter randy and oranges to the children santa parade was sumpirt there is unanimous opinion that saturday s santa claus parade in georgetown was one of the real en tertainment highlights ever presented in town it was the 24th annual parade which the lions club has sponsored and this year there was a great big assist from nonclubbers particularly the fire de partment and the various industries and businessmen who contributed floats anyone who has ever worked on a float knows a little of the work that goes into creating a work of art out of paper and wood the fact that various con travel talks end the 21st instalment of mr and mrs john cor da to travel tarings them home again in this issue of the herald arid and what has been a most interesting feature for alrrjat five months when mrijcordero first told us last spring that she intended to share their trip with friends we had no dee of the magnitude of the work she contempla ted maybe she didn t either to travel in strange lands attend church conven fioni se the sights and sit down every night or two to reod mpressions of the trip is a tiring job we will always be grateful for these etters for to miitet of us tnbutors harmonied the r floats to depict nursery rhyme characters added to their artistry and everyone who saw it go by remarked on how effective the par ade was and the flock ot children larger than any prev ious year in history showed that the parade is worth while to all those wixj worked so hard we know we express the thanks of everyone when wo say well done it will be the closest we will ever have to a trip abroad they were much more than the average travel letters for mrs cordaro has a knack of writing the hu man interest side of things and building her story around little incidents we may soon forget descriptions of roman ruins english cathedrals and the swiss scenery but who will ever forget the taxi driver they took to dinner or the ewcl incident in italy the reunion with english rel atives and the longing for a roast beef dinner m iho midst of foreign delicacies the true christinas spirit christmas is a time of happiness of presents and parties gay trees and coloured lights it is a festive season full of happiness and good will when differ ences of opinion seem dissolved when even strangers greet each other with the time honoured merry christmas phrase it is much more than that however and this year when the 25th comes on a sunday it should have more of its true meaning than ever marking the birth of one who to most canadians is the foundation stone of their religious beliefs and to those not professing the christian faith a recognized loarnod man who conln buted more to the world culturo than any other sin gle individual christmas is a time of church going as well as holiday celebration n in every christian denomination there should bo no missing faces at sunday s church services rcver ence can mix with othor things that day and what hap pier prelude to opening presents and feasting on tur key and plum pudding than to attend church service as a family christmas meeting norval union yps a seasonal program was enjoyed hy the members of the younu peonies
