morning i noticed the milkman was having difficulty with either the horse or cart at any rate he was leading the horse down the road and it attracted the excited attention of the small boy of the household seeing that horse on his rounds in the morning is one of the pleasures of his iife there are so few horses to be seen in town any more than the sight of one refllly is quite remarkable using the word in its most literate sense and that particular horse ib quite remarkable in the horse sense depart ment too downtown last week it was standing beside a car parked parallel to the curb when the lady driver stv- ted to manoeuvre her car out of the parking space out onto the road ap parently sensing what she was trying to do the horse immediately backed up a cars length to allow her room to back out i thought that was pretty discerning but the gentlemen i re peated the incident to thought it was even more so he claims the horse noticed it was a ladydriver and deci ded to keep his distance 0 i mentioned in last weeks column i thought it a shame to put away all those beautiful christmas cards whether in storage or the incinerator a lot of other peo ple feel the same way i imagine but dont know where to send them most of the likely places in our own coun try are only too well supplied with them some even having to go so far as to send out sob messages saying please no more christmas cards having this in mind a thoughtful lady in town clipped out a list of pla ces in distant lands where our lovely christinas cards may bring even greater pleasure to others than they did to themselves it will involve a little trouble on your part and a fcw cents outlay but 15 or 20 minutes of your lime and possible as many ctnts for postage and vou 11 have dom a reall worthwhile job 0 when parcelling the cards if j null wrap and la hum set urelj leaving the ends or even part of ont end optn the can go as printed matter at the rate of one tent for two ounces thus a pound uf earth would cost for mailing only utihl cents at the post office ask for the little green custom stickers and on theic write used christmas cards no value now you re all set for the addrc ses the ever know how the credit river was named it came about in quite an un ique fashion many years ago when the french traded with the indians at a meeting place at the mouth of the river they were given supplies on credit for which they paid the follow ing spring in furs thus the river was named the credit river this is only a very small sample of the wealth of interesting informa tion contained in the book haltons pages of the past written by gwen clarke and published by the dills printing and publishing co ltd of acton and milton if youre at all in terested in the history of the county in which wc live i know youll enjoy this book certainly mrs clarke has rendered a valuable service to the county by writing it 9 originally the book ap peared m column form in the acton free press and atlas today j in view of the tremendous success of themght school clas seson georgetown i was surpri scd to read a news item in the palmer ston observer a few weeks ago citing what a poor response there was in palmerslon and district to the courses offered by night school classes were offered there in drama folk dancing felt work and other crafts commcrc lal typing and bookkeeping basic en glish and citizenship leathercraft special cooking motor mechanics and lastly general shop work the net result was that there were enough people interested in folk dancing to hold instruction in the night school auditorium in palmer ston and enough people interested in the commercial course to hold a course in harnston where the bulk of the students lived the other cratts elicited very little or
