associations or groups this past week received their cost an alyses figures for the year ending jehovah witnesses convene at guelph guelph last week end played host to a three day circuit assembly of je hovahs witnesses this is the final convention in a series of five embrac ing the greater toronto area so great has been the growth of jehovahs wit nesses during the past few years that these divisions have been necessary to find auditoriums large enough to acommodate the people being attrac ted to these meetings this local growth of the organlza uon is reflected in the world growth of jehovahs witnesses as the figures in 1s55 reveal that a peak of 642929 ministers engageing in preaching ac tivity was reached during that year bible study aids were distributed to persons of goodwill as a result of this energetic ministerial work to the ex tend of 85 and a half million copies of the watchtower and awake maga zines as well as 46 and a half million bibles books and booklets from june 22nd to august 28th 1955 twelve world assemblies were held by jehovahs witnesses five in north america and seven in europe a combined total of 403682 persons attended the public bible discourse which was the climax of each of these conventions further indicating the phenomenal growth of this movement over 13000 were baptized at the bap tismal services conducted at theic ga thermgs friday evenings meeting included a theocratic ministry school featur ing various delegates giving instruct ivc discourses eleven year old dav id henderson of guelph participated in the program by public bible read ing and was offered constructive coun scl by j h nathan district supervis or convention attendance reached 306 at this session saturday s activities featured an immersion or baptismal service there were 10 delegates who took this op portunity to signify their dedication to god and thur destrc to preach the truth of his word the bibk wherever possible the evening sessions had as their theme right kind of ministers a well planned demonstration illus trated efficient preparation of ierm ons for use in house to house minis try f urthcr demonstrations and dis course emphasized the need for and recommended procedure in following up good will interest attendance rose to 497 saturdaj evening the main talk ml the assembly overcoming the fears of this dtner ation was given on sunday by j r nathan he introduced his discourse by enumerating many fears that beset this generation the speaker then proved scnpturally from hebrews 2 1415 that mankind suffers these fears because of the influence of sat an the god of this world this situ ation is most perplexing because peo ple arc ignorant of satan s ambitions as corroborated at 2 corinthians 4 4 mr nathan emphasized the point that the fears of this generation arc among the signs given in the scrip tures at matthew 24 pointing to the end of this system of things after recounting the conditions of perplex it and uncertainty that we know only too well to exist throughout the world today the speaker next set foilh con crete scriptural counsel toward over coming these fears the first point offered was psalm 19 9 which ad monishes one to fear jehovah which fear uads to life secondly fear must be overcome with knowledge 2 corinthians 10 45 j h nathan ecr reminded his listeners that by understanding the worlds woes we can be happy in the hope that the scriptures otter man kind the speaker impressed his lis tencrs with the fact that faith and its conquering power is the weapon used to fight fear citing examples of pat narchs of bible days and also quot ing john 5 4 mr nathan then outlin cd the step by step scriptural proced urc for using faiths conquering pow cr true christian love must accom pany faith and mr nathan cited the examples left by jesus the practical application of love today is demon strated by neighbour love jehovahs witnesses the new world society are the only people on earth today who practice unitedly neighbour love in their daily living the speaker then concluded this discourse by extending an invitation to all in attendance to associate with the society overcome the fears of a fearridden world and enhance their possibilities of living forever in jeho vahs new world one of the last meetings sun day afternoon that prompted much in terest was the delegates participation in a discussion of experiences at the european conventions different del egates ipontancousty reminisced their experiences at the world assemblies in europe in 1955 conventions such as those at london rome germany and sweden were discussed personal experiences some humorous were re lated but all experiences had the un dertone of appreciation for the warm christian lore that was extended to them by their brothers overseas the attendance reached a peak of 769 at the sunday public talk during the assembly a total of 1190 meals were served the delegates as well ti many sandwiches hot dogs etc from the snack bar april 30th 1955 this in our opinion is one of the most valuau pud appre ciated pieces of extension work being conducted by the ont dept of agri culture in any event during the past few days several of the dhia mem bers have brought in their individual reports and to state they were well pleased with the service is putting it very mildly at this office we get a summary for each of the three groups the breakdown for each group reveals the following 1 production per cow 2 feeding efficiency 3 labour efficiency 4 capital use 5 size of business under each of the five factors is presented the average for the 24 herds in each group the average fig ure of the two herds with the high est returns and the average of the 2 herds with the low net returns in addition each herd owner receives the figure for his own herd with a rating weak average or strong we were interested to note that the average production per cow in the 72 herds is approximately 8735 lbs in the 305 day lactation for the prev ious year the average production fig ure for the same 72 herds was 8190 lbs cost milk production varies materially we also note that the cost of produ cing milk in the 72 herds in halton in the year ending on april 30th last varies all the way from 2 90 to 5 20 per cwt the average figure for the entire 72 herds was 3 66 cwt this figure covers the cost of feed lab our overhead veterinary breeding fees milker supplies marketing fees milk haulage plus the dairy share of the farm taxes hydro and in surance in the case of butter fat the cost of production varies from 76 cents to 1 53 per pound with the av erage figure of 1 03 these figures therefore will be a bit startling to those who are inclined to bemoan ov er the present price of butter or criti cize tht federal government for a floor price of 58 cents per lb high production per cow is always an im portant factor in the cost of produc lion nevertheless this study and all other similar farm management stu dies reveal that it is only when the operator is above average on all five factors previousl listed that he gets his cost figure for producing 100 lbs of milk down between the j 50 and and s3 00 mark in short it is possible for an operator to be strong on four of the five factors listed and if much btlow average on the fifth factor still end up with a losing proposition or to present it in a different way it would seem that obtaining average efficiency in all five factors leads to lower costs than was obtained by any group of herds which were the best in any one factor but which ma have been low in other factors dairy herd improvement work is a policy only for grade or mixed herds of grades and purebreds it is organ ized in halton under the milton of fice of the ont dept of agriculture the ont i ivestock branch is rcspon sible for the supervision on produc tion etc with the farm economics branch providing the cost analysis etc halton is one of the few
