were interested when looking over reports to find that zone b7 has received a dozen of the scholarships awarded each year by the canadian legion two of them by the way went to nearby centres brampton and port credit it would be nice if geor getown could make the grade one of these years scholarships have been given away each year by the provin clal command for the past five yean and although the branches in marv cases have not supported too well this very worthwhile project managed to givo some two dozen again last year tho women auxiliaries have taken this project really to their hearts and have carried a large share of the load we really can t understand why the branches cannot see the light and support this it is the only system of scholarships in canada designed for the needs of needy students in canada who do not fall into the category of whiz kide by this we mean that in era we find large firms and govern ments themselves making it possible for brilliant students to go to univer sity by easing the financial 4oad with well set up scholarship funds and bur sarles however as these agencies are mainly interested in helping the really brilliant boy or girl you find a vacuum in the larger group of stud dents who will never break any schol astics records but each year manage to pass by a fair margin to illustrate this actual figures in this country re veal that less than four per cent of those starting school graduate from university and that a great percent age of those who do attend fail to graduate solely through financial rca sons or contributing factors with all this in mind ontario com mand set up a committee to study the situation as affecting ex service per sonncls children and it was decided to institute a sjstcm of scholarships whereby any needy child of a veteran who made a ekemt ousmiil mark in high school would be assisted finan cially by the legion on the rccom mcnttation of his hitji bchool pnnu pal to date there have been only two applications from georgetown 1 of whom withdrew the application as they had decided not to continue to university ariministennl the whole plan is an outstanding eommittec headed by the hon dr w j dunlop minisut of education fur ontario and himself a legion member these men have in our tstimati n done a wonder ful job in i rieseiw a jrc it di il of credit as well as the support of the entire membership of the legion it is a fitt that m milctiwn c nny well be proud of the fact that branch 120 has been consistently one of the htav financial baekeis of the scheme and the women s auxiliary have gone rifht along matching dot lar for dollar with the branch let us hope that this practice may long con tinuc a new system has been started to handle transfers of membership un der which members wishing to tran sfcr only have to have the branch to which the member is transferring fill in a copy and send it to provincial command along with a courtesy copy to the branch from which the mem bcr is moving command takes care ot the rest altering their records as necessary we notice that the legion is trying to discourage branches from taking on promotional schemes and projects which are costing the public in their community money it has been found that these schemes arc usually hand led by advertising firms promoters might be a better name who are on ly interested in making a few fast dollars often on the strength of the organizations name and prestige in their home community for an overall gain of a few dollars and the relative loss of good will from the merchants who are usually the ones who have to pay the shot in our years in the ad vertising business in town we have seen so many of these operators come to town put on a show or project of some kind milk the business men in such a way that they can t argue i e by sending local people around to sell the so called advertising or program spice that it isn t even funny we can safely say that every merchant in town has had the same thought on many occasions and we arc glad at last to see that one organization at least the legion has risen above this practice and arc tring to discourage it by their branches touching on membership we think that in this town members of vctcr ans has been barclj scratched and that with the executive running a proper membership drive big things could be accomplished the potential membership in town and djstrict is terrific many of these people barely know of our existence therefore it is up to us to get out and sell the le gion to them you have everything in our branch that you could ask for whether yu like sociable brew or whether you are strictly a teetot allcr our branch has lots to offer so if any new residents or oi ones who see this are veterans why not think it over and get in touch with any member of the branch and hell be glad to help you get in and also to introduce you around the only re quirement are that you hive served id the armed forces active and that yoa can produce honorable discharge papers if each member would just bring in one other member then the in crease would be tremendous and it is quite possible were been paring official viiiu as tone commander to the variow braochei in b7 and bare bees ea- joyiaj it thoroughly farm news significant increase in grade a hogs jew in 1955 halton hog producers mar ketcd a total of 19 131 hogs this is an increase of 17 per cent over their 1054 marketings this is very close to the percentage increase across ca nada namely 16 4 per cent hog mar ketlngs in 1955 showed an increase of 12 8 per cent in eastern canada and 21 per cent increase in western can ada the province of saskatchewan came up with tho biggest increase namely 33 5 pei cent ontario is still the heaviest hog producers with near ly two million hogs in second posi tion is the province of alberta with 1685 887 western canada accounted for 46 per cent of canada s hog mar kctings of 1955 from the standpoint of quality hal ton producers registered the largest increase in percentage of grade a s marketed by any ontario county in the past year recent figures releas cd by the ontario livestock branch shows that the percentage of grade as marketed in 1955 by halton hog producers was 35 3 per cent or an in crease of 5 4 per cent over the 1954 figure perhaps the carcass cutting demonstration at halton s 1955 seed frair and bacon show can take some of the credit in any event there was plenty of room for improvement it is only a few years ago since 42 per cent of halton s hogs graded a actually waterloo was the top county with 37 3 per cent grade a s with halton in fourth position nearly 32 just what can be picked up from oth u meetings last today night we were at oakville and monday nit lit went to port credit so far it has been a thoroughly enjoyable chore fen the oakville trip we by that i mean the writer and his zone secre tary took henry shepherd alone for compan and were tiad that we did we just don t know what hold he has on the bojs down there on the lake- front but cvervone seemed to turn out to greet him seems he either trained or served with every major or reeve oakville has had in e irs and th all wanted to nncw old ic qu untancc made it very nice for ours trulv and srcrctiry except that had vc taken advantage of all the hospit ilit offered wed still be in oakwlle to llltistnte that we an n t itr line henry uthtr s neri with in ont of the wars or in the re fi mint in hehuen three of oakville s nnvors jim illack i achlan mcarlh ur and bill anderson is well as we can recall when he was fism al the hit e imp at i it ira in lt40 hi inl as his csm from oakville companj oakville s present reeve bill card we have a number of more visits to make to branches around the zone imi arc alwavs elal of company if you want to come along or bring a cir load just let the sicrctary know other branches are a friendly group and love to have visitors fas well as helping promote better spirit in the zone and giving the zone commander a bit of moral support we arc still being asked about the legionary and when it will start being delivered it is is expected it will be the march or april issue dortt forget the zone meeting on sunday february 19th its to be held at port credit and we hope that a number will go over from town al so keep in mind the next regular monthly meeting of pur branch on the 23rd try and be on hand for it per cent of ontarios hogs made the a grade and tho percentage for all of canada was 27 per cent the prov ince of alberta the second heaviest hog producer in canada had only 18 9 per cent grade as so it is to do hoped that tho new lacombo breed originated at the lacombe experimen tal station by the canada department of agriculture is as good as news paper publicity would lead one to be lieve canada exported nearly fifty six million pounds of pork products in 1955 and practically all of it went to the united states needless to point out the us has a surplus of pork pro ducts herself and the only reason why canada was able to export pork pro ducts to that country was due to lack of quality in the united states prod uct had this 56 million pounds re mained on the canadian market can adian hog prices would have hit the floor of 23 cents long before they did furthermore as pointed out recently by l w pcarsall director of market ing for the canada department of ag ricultue canadian producers are hv ing in a sense of false security bee auso of health regulations which at present serve as an embargo on am erican pork currently the chicago price for hogs is the equivalent to ab out 16 per cwt compared with the 23 price on the toronto market when the disease problem is cleared up stated mr pearsall the cmbar go will be removed we do not pose as an economist but should the em bargo be removed we tail to see how it would be possible for the canadian government to maintain the 23c floor so instead of asking for a higher sup port price on hogs we think canadian farm organizations and hog producers generally would do well to seriously consider doing a job on quality when one realizes that 73 6 per cent of the hogs in our advanced rcfcistry test stations made grade a and further when we know positively that here and there arc hog producers who consistently get 70 to 80 per cent r hu a s is there any rhyme or rea son for only 32 per cent of our onta no hofs making gride a some day oinudiin hot producers will waken up to the fact as the danish produc rs did many jears ago that they will have to do something to help thcmscl ves ierlnps bill watson ontario
