herald is printed each wednesday in the office at 22 main st georgetown planning bored could be listening to opening discussions about maugura tion of a georgetown planning board at a council mee ting last week we wondered just how long any such board could keep from changing its spelling bored might be a better word to describe the plan ners who we fear will be frustrated every step along the way we are not against a try at planning and can cer tainly see a need for it and a ob to do but how any group of men and women who will compose it can proceed without some definite authority to make deci sions that stick will be quite a problem as we understand it any board decision is sub ect to ratification and final adoption by council the board in other words i purely a consultative body such is the nature of town planning that no prob lem is easy we can see a planning board spending many long hours arriving at decisions which they fee in the best interests of the town and not without dif ferences of opinion between individuals keep the letters coming it is encouraging to note in the last few herald issues a reb rth of mail bag it tiers may it her ad a return to the days when this paper served ihe ncds of sho e who had something to get off their chest or who wished to compliment an mdiv dual or organi at on or make a suggest on for bettering the community there are so many newcomers to town that a re statement of policy on mail bag letters might be in or der while we do not always require that a writer s nam be printed we must at least have this name on file as an evidence of good faith on the part of the per son submitting it if a subect is extremely controversial then we will not publish a letter with a pseudonym for it places us rather than the writer in a position of answering his critics i ia subel matter is controversial but i broad as to not be aimed at any specific point then a forewarned is forearmed halton county health unit alarmed about an outbreak of rabies in areas north of lake simcoe has this week issued a warning to county residents to be on the lookout for any signs of its spread south abnormal behaviour in foxes or other animals particularly should be treated with suspicion the health unit says it is the fox that is blamed for spread ing the disease and foxes suffering from rabies often appear quite tame discovery of sick or dead wild ani mas should be reported to the unit as soon as possible any case where people are bitten by animals sus pected of having rabies are required to be reported to if a planning board which is somewhat further removed from the whims of the electorate than a town council can then be overruled by that body in matters which can be disputed we cad frankly see no particu lar value in having the planning board in the first place perhaps its end purpose wil be as a buffer be tween ratepayers and their elected representatives where a controversial subect will be kicked back ano forth so long that the reason for any certain action will be swallowed up in time if council is really serous in thinking town plan ning a good thing then we can see nothing for it but to name a board which will be given certain authority to proceed in certain directio is a council veto power for every decis on large or small n ii be little encour agement for any man who values his spare time to spend it decidi as an effec live means of breaking the chain of infection from rab id wild animals to dogs or cats and to humans hunters are particularly urged to have their hunting dogs rec eive the vaccine a rabies outbreak is nothing to fool with health unit officials say and it is much easier to avoid it by taking advance precautions than to fight it after it starts legion notes by los clark the regular
