meeting of one ohialton s junior farmer clubs this past week it was the milton club and they met in the home of grant devlin at omagh while accommodation was taxed to the limit this did not detract from the enjoyment and success of the even ing obviously we could not sit in at both meetings which were in progress at the same time in different rooms however as we listened in at the jun ior farmers meeting to the sccrtary s report of the year s activities and to president bruce bawdens final ad dress and watched the despatch with which he handled the lengthy business programme of an annual meeting well we were intrigued and yes it makes one realize all the more that junior farmer week brings results th election of the officers for the next year resulted as follows jr farmers er group won the i dick trophy for the best plaj defeating milton aeton and palermo junior farmers and mildred johnson of the sanu group won the margaret alice llhott trophy for the best actress dive wil son of millon rcctned the j h white lock trophj for the best actor the millon pi ij a melodnma was ably presented by chris h irris mir garct stark jean lctcrson ihjllis bndky lirucc bawden alma brad h and dave wilson dneelor of dark brown w is stuart mel adden it was the story of a joung wife who thought her husb ind wis the man on trial for the murder of another worn m and his disappcarincc at the time of the trial added to her anxiety the audi encc was kept in suspense until the very end when she found out thit her husb ind was not the murdered but the hangman the winning play a comedj inclu ded rraser mcnabb thelma brown bvelyn bird mildred johnson and ross austin in the cast and was dir ected by howson ruddcll named su gar and spice it depicted the trials and tribulations of a young girl who tries to impress a girl friend who has just returned from a six months holi day in pans the friend mildred johnson came back from pans cleg ant and tried her best to convert the whole household to her way of living which proved too much for them the adjuicator miss elsie thompson of hamilton later gave mildred johnson credit for realistic ad libbing when someone missed a cue halfway thro ttle picsentation marjoric mcdonald kathleen stan ley don matthews sandy buchanan and bill price made up the cast of the acton play a drama entitled tiger 1 1 ly in this play mr buchanan and miss stanley tried to kill miss mc donald and mr price for a s20 000 insurance policy but arc outwitted in the end the play was directed by j hurst mrs evelyn coates directed the fi nal play by palermo called all cars to the rescue taking part were bill kelly marilyn campbell marilyn hes lop marie marshall bill robinson helen vivian roy ford and donna ford the story told of the attempts of three women to marry calvin carr an oilman played by bill kelly all the relatives pitch in to help confuse matters even more and with disguises and tall laics managed to turn the household into an uproar naturally calvin carr gets the best wife in the end but the audience was kept in fits of laughter until he did so between plays a variety of enter tainment was presented george at kins of the cbc farm broadcast spoke for a few minutes about the pleasure he received in doing the christmas broadcast with the halton junior farmers barbara cunning ham of norval sang two solos come to the fair and a perfect day accom panied by ruth wilson at the piano john pickett president of the halton junior farmers acted as chairman for the evening wis thompson tn announcing the results of her adjudication gave con structive criticism of each play which should prove helpful to the players in turning out better work each jrear she crilieistd the dark lighting and un h irmonious scenery of milton as well is voice control and anety lo the norval froup she offered congratul itions for i splendid ad libbing job but criticized the unnecessary wearing of masses during the pla ihe aeton ljoup received criticism for not en oujh rehearsal and an unrcilislie kis sini scene pilcrmo plajcrs were told not to wan kr all oui the st il and to refrain from gesticulation she en e urtltl better diction and better clinching speaking to ill the phwrs miss ihompson explained thit little prob- li ms inuld be ironed out if their play wis presi nled t some other mdience ik fore appearing at the festial she told the directors to gnc the actors something to be doing all the time thev were on stage as some found it difficult standing there with nothing lo say or do following miss thompson s an nouncemenl of the winners k y dick in i lie unavoidable absence of his fa ther presented the w i dick trophy for the best play which was won last year by milton to howson ruddell director of the norval play george llhott presented the margirct alice elliott trophy for the best actress to mildred johnston for her part in su gar and spice this trophy was won last year by jean peterson and doro thy ingram the j e whitelock tro phy for the best actor went to dave w ilson for his part m dark brown and was presented by mr whitelock bill kelly won this last year leaves three brothers ind two gentleman who will be mis sed greatly in the life of st johns united church and in the whole com mumty where his life was an example for others to follow mr godfrey sue cumbed to a sudden heart attack on wednesday morning at bis home 30 chapel street east mr godfrey was one of the church s most prominent and faithful mem hers he served as an elder on the church session and in past years had hecn active in sunday school work he was superintendent of the church school at knox presbyterian before church union and later held a simitar position in st johns at st johns he is particularly remembered for his direction of the argonauts class a group or young men whose lives were influenced by his teaching he had been president of george town branch of the bible society for ovct a quarter of a century mr godfrey was a native of new castleon tyne england he came to canada n 1905 lived for a year in glen williams then moved to geor getown his fiancee esther douglas joined him in canada a year after he emigrated and they spent all their married life in georgetown he wor ked at provincial paper ltd then joi ned the staff of alliance paper when this business was established here by l e fleck
